MANHATTAN - As the coronavirus continues to spread around the country, New York is preparing for the financial crisis left in its wake.

Wednesday, Mayor Bill de Balsio issued a stark warning if the city doesn't get financial help.

"If we ever got to the point of having to activate that layoff plan for the fall, we're talking 22,000 employees, that's a vast, vast number of people," de Blasio said during a press conference.

For weeks protesters have called on the mayor and city council to defund the NYPD. With the 2021 city budget due next week, hundreds of people are holding a sit-in at City Hall Park to put pressure on the Mayor and City Council to defund the NYPD.

**SNIP**

To put those 22,000 layoffs or furloughs in perspective, the city only cut 17,000 jobs from 2008 to 2012 during the recession.

I don’t think the state government will come to their rescue on this one. In this game of poker, I think he bluffed one too many.

Trump and the Feds definitely won’t arrive to rescue him.

Maybe just a guess here, but come August and money gets real tight....I see new riots, but with city workers participating this time.

You can't pay workers and pay Welfare recipients at the same time. One group has to suffer. So, it looks like it will be workers...since they are not reliable Democrat voters.

Less money, less political influence for Democrats in cities like New York. That’s one bright side of the so-called lockdowns.

A sh*thole city sliding further and further into sh*thole status. And given the fact that the people in NYC keep voting for these POS, they are happily loving having their city be an actual sh*thole. Go figure.

And comrade Cortez won her primary after chasing thousands of good paying jobs and their revenue from the area.

Democrats are just stupid.

From 2019...

How de Blasio has bloated the city’s budget

Read it and weep.

And, federal taxpayers, lest you think this is NYS's problem alone, think again.

You're paying for his profligacy, too...

Are you saying that employees of the City of New York are “workers”? I think that’s an overgeneralization, to put it charitably.

Why should Idaho taxpayers pay more in federal taxes to bail out uber the expensive NYC government? Liberals always spend like there will never be a rainy day, and then keep adding and adding to their expenses as long as it doesn’t rain, then yell for help when the rainy days come. The people of NYC deserve the government they have, and the people of NYC need to pay for it themselves.

NYC has been one of the top tourist destinations in the world. Deblasio allowed his city to be destroyed & massive amounts of tourist dollars are gone. We live 2 hours away & sometimes take the bus to see a show, etc. Not going to do that anymore...

That is your opinion. The people of New York City love him. They re-elected him.

I understand that. We used to take light rail to downtown to see the Colorado Symphony. The Denver arts center decided they needed to “protect” their customers so they installed metal detectors. The symphony was not dangerous; the walk to and from light rail downtown at night was more dangerous. Now we go to some of the county Symphony concerts.
