The Three Gorges Dam is one of the biggest if not the biggest gravity dam in the world. China is currently seeing record flooding, with three-four days of rain still in the future for the area around the dam.

When the dam was under construction, they asked foreign consultants to come in and inspect the dam. The consultants noted poor concrete quality and insufficient rebar supports. The Chinese then kicked the consultants out and called them racist.

The dam itself has taken damage from a 2012 earthquake and is now currently stressed. If it were to break, millions of lives could be at stake, especially since a huge amount of power is wired through the dam, thus, if it breaks during the night, people could be making a blind rush into the dark and into a wall of water.

I just reread your post to me and realize now you were referring to recent surveillance technology, not dam building technology. I’m not very computer literate, but certainly believe that China has lots of surveillance

The number of open three gorges flood gates varies with the perceived inflow and varies. The most reported is 9 out of I believe 42. Yesterday there were 7 reported by several sources.

The journalists concentrate on the dam while ignoring the flood damage above and below the dam. There is no way to measure or value the monstrous, gigantic, humongous damage.

I have come to believe that although the hydrologists have a handle on management of the flooding, the CCP is totally unable to respond meaningfully in real time.

Also, Chinese associate natural disasters with a change in the mandate from heaven, in other words, a change of power.

As if the WuFlu wasn't enough of a sign. Although that was most likely a laboratory created disaster.

According to the official figures, the water is being discharged at a rate 2000 cubic meters greater than the water arriving. Of course, it used to be that the river just flooded every year, spreading out over those cities, towns, and villages that are now permanently submerged, and killing thousands. If the Chinese wanted flood control they could combine the function of the reseervoir and the hydroelectricity to pump water to deep in the interior for use in trickle irrigation in the Takla Makan. Now *that* would a project that would impress everyone.

With only 3 flood gates discharging I guess the danger is reducing. I saw one photo with 11 gates flowing. Pump water, make the Gobi bloom!! I saw a fascinating engineering story on how the Colorado River was tamed and water pumped to Los Angeles through a 13 mile tunnel and pumped directly over mountains. I wonder if the challenge is more dramatic in China.

Thank you for the ping, I have not yet had time to look at it but it was on the news today. Report that over 90 people were drowned in a subway because of this flooding. A year’s worth of rain all at once. Germany has been very badly flooded and they only had about 10 inches in 2 days.

It is my limited understanding that the three gorges dam is on the Yangtze river and the current flooding is to the north on the Yellow river

I'm going to check it out later but for now believe any current stories about the three gorges dam are merely click bait to draw in eyeballs

When considering the Yellow river, I worry about Ping, one of my favorites

Rerunning this thread brings in people who are already interested in the topic “disaster in China”. I don’t remember any of the flood stories I saw about this recent China flooding mentioning the Gorges Dam. I most recently saw a rain figure of over 20 inches causing the flood. As to the CIA controlling the weather, I wish they would do something about those 20, 30, 40 inch rainfall floods drowning coastal Texas and the low level interior spaces like Houston.

Actually, the Chinese have a program called Sky River that uses facilities in Tibet to seed clouds so that less-rainy areas of China get more rain.

This year there are some leaky areas in the middle of the dam where water is dripping through the front face and there’s the worry of sediment blocking the outflow valves.
