The Three Gorges Dam is one of the biggest if not the biggest gravity dam in the world. China is currently seeing record flooding, with three-four days of rain still in the future for the area around the dam.
When the dam was under construction, they asked foreign consultants to come in and inspect the dam. The consultants noted poor concrete quality and insufficient rebar supports. The Chinese then kicked the consultants out and called them racist.
A good video of the extent of the flooding.
The dam itself has taken damage from a 2012 earthquake and is now currently stressed. If it were to break, millions of lives could be at stake, especially since a huge amount of power is wired through the dam, thus, if it breaks during the night, people could be making a blind rush into the dark and into a wall of water.
140 million people and 25% of China’s agricultural production in the path if the dam breaks.
When The Levee (or Dam) Breaks
1,000 km upriver from Shanghai and the mouth of the Yangtze Delta sits a marvel of modern mega-engineering: The Three Gorges Dam. It might be about to collapse. What happens if it does?

SHANGHAI — Chinese authorities cautioned on Sunday of water topping warning levels on the Yangtze River as a third wave of floodwater is expected at Three Gorges Dam over the next three days.
The country is already facing one of its worst floods since 1998 with water breaching record levels at key waterways and lakes.
“The inflow of the Three Gorges Dam on the upstream Yangtze River may reach 60,000 cubic meters per second on Tuesday,” the Ministry of Water Resources said in a statement. “Water at the Yangtze River midstream will rise again and exceed its limit by 0.2 meters.” The ministry also warned of a “huge flood” both east and west of the city of Yichang in Hubei Province where the dam is located.

The power giant has approached sovereign funds including Singapores GIC Pte and China Investment Corp. about potentially acquiring a minority interest representing between 10% and 20% of China Three Gorges international assets, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the matter is private.
They need to reduce the debt, but will be difficult to find external investors willing to take a minority share in companies owned by TGC even abroad. If bad things happen with the Three Gorges Dam they have to sell these foreign assets and then the price will go down. Perhaps they will understand that it is better to sell the overseas assets now.
Hummm, 1998. Anything to do with the 11/22 year sun spot cycle pattern?
Information that 1998 was a severe flood year suggests that this could be related to the 11 year/22 year sun spot cycle.
Given that my post is more than a month after this one and problems have persisted, loss of the Mandate from Heaven is still an important speculation. I read elsewhere that 1/3 of the parliamentary session that voted for the TGD dam were against it. Wonder if that is enoough political support to overthrow the Mandate?
I’ve been hearing about this collapse for months now.
A photo I saw from late July showed 6 spouts draining the dam’s lake.
Given the way the Chinese have been treating the muslim Uigars (sp?), concentration camps and probably worse. The Fulan Gong people say they have also been persecuted with organs being harvested for transplant and other horrors. Who is to say some muslim terror group might not take out that dam. I doubt they care much for other Chinese ethnic groups after the way they have been treated.
For someone to take the dam down, or carry out any significant atttack inside the PRC, they need to evade the Chinese surveillance state. I think that is very unlikely.
“Who is to say some muslim terror group might not take out that dam.”
The Uighur are not a fundamentalist Muslim group and there is not much support for them in the Uighur areas. The Uighur are not Arabs, not Turks, not Afghans, not Pakistani and not North African. They are as old, if not older, in the land of Xinjiang than the Han Chinese. THAT, NOT their form of Islam, is what sets them apart, and which they seek to preserve, and like the Tibetans which the Han Chinese want to destroy by cultural genocide. The Uighur separatists are not going to blow up a dam in central China. What they are about is being Uighur, NOT Chinese, and of which being Muslim is only one part.
They go way back to here:
The Curse OF The Red-Headed Mummy
They were in their homeland way before any Chinese. As late as the 1300's there were still Caucasian only graveyards there.
Genetic Testing Reveals Awkward Truth About Xinjiangs Famous Mummies (Caucasian)
"URUMQI, China - After years of controversy and political intrigue, archaeologists using genetic testing have proven that Caucasians roamed Chinas Tarim Basin 1,000 years before East Asian people arrived."
"The Tarim mummies suggest that precursors of these easternmost speakers of an Indo-European language may have lived in the region of the Tarim Basin from around 1800 BCE until finally they were assimilated by Uyghur Turks in the 9th century CE. "
I see.
Chinese ‘leaders’ don’t care about Chinese ‘lives’ anymore than Black Lives Matter cares about black lives. These humans are nothing more than horses to ride to power for both groups.
Just to be clear, I have not been speculating about the construction work. I have been commenting on weather, conditions, and speculation on social effects. There were several others making interesting comments on the possible construction issues.
Read an article the other day where an American engineer went to that dam and could not believe the sorry state the concrete was. Said it was really lousy quality and that he was stunned at the lack of reinforcing rebar that was used to build it, AND that it was basically built on mud and dirt and NOT on a rock or stone base, thus it is sinking!! That much water behind the dam threatened something like 300-MILLION people down stream. Wow.
