Four of Tom Petty's family members came together Saturday night to quickly release a statement blasting the president for using the rockers I Wont Back Down at his Tulsa campaign rally, saying Petty would never want a song of his used for a campaign of hate. He liked to bring people together.
The statement said that Donald Trump was in no way authorized to use this song to further a campaign that leaves too many Americans and common sense behind. Both the late Tom Petty and his family firmly stand against racism and discrimination of any kind.
The declaration was signed by Adria and Annakim Petty, his two daughters, as well as both Dana Petty, his wife at the time of his death in 2017, and Jane Petty, his former wife. They end the note by saying they will be filing a cease-and-desist order against the campaign.

Not true. It is not in the public domain. The estate has the right to release or refuse to release the work of a deceased musician. Using it without permission is a violation of the copyright.
So, did this man of love and unity leave his first wife or did she leave him?
***a druggies song if its available to anyone to use for money.***
Just pay the ASCAP or BMI dues and use it.
Tom Petty wished he hadn’t used Confederate flag on 1985 tour: ‘It was a downright stupid thing to do’’

Whoops. 2017
Oh really do they believe they own those words? If those are hateful words then Tom Petty was very hateful
The only campaign of HATE IS THE demonratcommiescumbags on the Left like nazi pelousy, upchucky sclummer and ALL the rest of them A$$e$ in Ratland.
Im a real Tom Petty fan, even saw one of his last shows before his untimely passing. That being said, I DONT CARE! President Trump should not back down from this fight! Pay them their royalty and ignore their wailing! Dont like it? Too bad. They can piss & moan, but if he pays, they have nothing to squawk about. Thats all theyre entitled to.
One of my brothers is a big, big Tom Petty fan and an avid Trump supporter. His reaction to this news: screw ‘em.
lol
honestly, it would be cool to have rock bands (known or unknown) send in their recording of a patriotic song and select a few to be heard first time at a rally.
i think it would be cool :)
3 Doors Down certainly wouldn’t mind one of their songs being used as they made a video salute to the troops with one of their songs.
and Brett Michaels, the lead singer of Poison, is right leaning...though i think “Talk dirty to me’ might not be a good fit :)
“Don’t need nothing but a good time” would be a good one :)
I find it hard to believe that Trumps people didnt anticipate paying royalties.
Why not denounce the illicit opioid trade instead?
It killed your dad/husband/friend.
BAKE THE CAKE!
I would like to see the picture off tom with the confederate flag on his ball cap plastered all over the place and maybe on his family s twitter page I know they have one or maybe instagram.
President Trumps campaign is not about hate look who is wearing a confederate flag it is not Trump it’s Tom Petty.
The estate may not even own the copyright to the song. Even if it did, however, almost all copyright owners place their music with ASCAP and BMI and as long as the applicable royalties are paid anyone can use the songs. The Stones don't like him using "You Can't Always Get What You Want" either, but they can't stop him from using it because he pays the royalties.
Yep. Wixen Music Publishing owns the Tom Petty Song Library, and handles the licensing and royalties. If THEY complain about Trump using it I might pay attention. Family members have no say.
Perhaps Petty's surviving family members should take a look at the picture on the Wixen home page.
As R.E.M. threatens legal action to stop President Donald Trump from playing its classic hit songs at campaign rallies, the iconic band joins other musicians who have objected to their work serving as backdrops for politicians. Legal experts say artists do have a say in how their music is used, but getting their day in court can be costly and take years to pursue.
“It’s winnable in a lot of these situations it just takes time and money,” Gary Adelman, an attorney with Adelman Matz in New York, told CBS MoneyWatch. “I’ve been dealing with this issue for years, and to my knowledge almost anyone who has gotten a cease-and-desist letter obeys it.”

I think Tom Petty’s family could file a lawsuit to stop the use of the music by President’s campaign...It might take a long time however...
I don’t know if the President’s campaign should keep on using the Petty’s music...What is the point? Hearing complaints from family members...It’s not worth the headache...Petty’s family will probably win the lawsuit anyway...
I do not like what Petty’s family members said about the President...I am sure that I will not agree on many political issues with those people...
However, I respect their right not to allow Trump campaign to use the songs...
Many years ago, Pharrell Williams and Rihanna sent letters asking President to stop playing their music in campaign events...
