Happy Sunday all...it’s beautiful out...
The highlight tonight seems to be The Clock...
How’s it going?
Evening, folks. Heading to Walmart to risk life and limb for more pool supplies. I told the wife that if this round doesn’t fully clear it, I’m filling it in with dirt and putting a solar-powered birdbath in the center.
Evening, good luck.
Hi, Guys! Viking, Keith could tell you what to put in your pool to clear it up, if he had a sample of the water. :-D
Evening Gina.
Hey, Vision!
Viking, Keith said Walmart for pool chemicals is not a good choice, but if you describe the water, or post a picture of the water, he can probably tell you what to put it it to clear it.
Gina, It’s a 16’ x 32’ in-ground pool with a vinyl liner, a 1 1/2 HP Hayward pump, and a Hayward Pro Series sand filter with a six-way valve (not sure of the model, but it’s about 32 inches tall) that holds about 50 pounds of filter sand, give or take. The water is green, as in green algae. She’s hit it with one bottle of flocculent, new 3” chlorine tabs in the dual floater and the skimmer basket, and a boatload of Shock Xtra Blue and some pool salt, and it put a dent in it, but it’s clumping and floating, not sinking. We sprung almost $400 for a new, AC powered, heavy duty pool robot with twin collection bags inside, but the algae is overhead. I never anticipated throwing $1500 into this bathtub this year. I got better places to put my money, so if Keith can offer advice, I’m all ears. I do admit the sand in the filter probably needs replaced, and the pressure valve on the filter needs replaced, too.
I was standing in the parking lot, in a light drizzle, and witnessed an unending stream of morbidly obese women going in and out. Between that and their damned social distancing maze outside, it was like watching steers going through a stockyard cattle chute. Un-believable. I thought, my life has come to this? *chuckle* Could be worse. At least I’m still on the right side of the grass. Got an appointment to see someone tomorrow to get set up for an upper GI endoscopic exam. My oncologist wants to check for bleeders. He still doesn’t know what to make of my low platelet count. If there isn’t something wrong in my gut (and there may be, I was diagnosed with bad GERD almost 20 years ago and have to take omeprazole every day), the next option might be regular platelet transfusions, which was an early treatment option when this was first detected. He thinks it’s because my platelets are backing up in my spleen, which is why I have splenomegaly, but I’ll opt for the transfusions before I let them cut the whole thing out. Which is also on the table, but I won’t be. OK, I’m pig-headed. If they do find anything (which I almost hope, to get past this one thing, anyway), they go in with bands and a laser and do a clip-n-snip and patch it all up.
Hey, Viking. I’ve been analyzing pool water samples for the last 3 years. I think your pool is about 20k. Salt pool. Is that correct? Knowing the salt level, pH and chlorine level is needed. Also the CYA or cyanuric acid, aka, stabilizer level. I’m pretty sure that I can help fix your problem. Are you on well water or city? Need to know the pH, calcium and alkalinity level coming of the feed water. I know Hayward systems. They are very good.
Keith - if you’re referring to capacity, we actually are in the 35k range. It’s got a deep bottom end on it. Whoever had it built must have been a scuba diver. The shallow end, IIRC, is about 42”. Not a kiddy pool, for sure, it was built for adults who can swim. It has a steel rung ladder, but she also wants to put in a complete set of steps and rails in the shallow end (more the better for me). She said the calcium level was very low as of two days ago, so she did a two-day on a calcium raiser (sp?) and more Shock (which my wallet is also feeling - shock). I also got her enough flocculent to treat 100k gallons, and more pool bleach. BTW, the pool isn’t a saltwater pool, although I’d like to add that inline. For some reason, treating with pool salt seems to clear it right up if another bloom hits. Not sure what the other levels, pH, chlorine, etc. are yet. Gotta check that tomorrow. I leave most of the dirty work to her. Not that I can’t do it, but she was jonesing for a pool when we found this house, and staked dominion over it and the courtyard when we moved in. All I cared about was the 10’ palm tree with massive girth planted in the corner of the pool fence. My little piece of the tropics. As Gina can tell you, I have bad legs that are subject to reinfection (I’m ‘high risk’, says my doctor), so the water has to be crystal clear and bacteria free for me to get in it.
A picture would help. Try to get the pH around 7.2 and elevate the chlorine level, 10 lbs. Floc (aluminum sulfate) to settle the algae. Vacuum to waste. If it’s mustard algae use bromide 2 lbs, along with a good amount of chlorine, 10 lbs. Use quality chlorine. Stay away from any 3-n-1 type products like HTH brand. Most of the time if the water chemistry gets crazy fresh water is the best thing, then balance the water. Good luck.
Oops. LOL I'll see if I can post a pic later in the week, or next weekend. Ever since Photobucket went uptown on us, I haven't tried to post anything from a personal library. But I'll check those chem levels this week, for sure. Normally we have the pool open in time for Memorial Day Weekend, but it's been a cooler than normal spring here in Alabama, so we didn't take the cover off sooner like we have in the past.
