Chicago police officers on Sunday had once again been ordered to work 12-hour shifts and have their days off canceled amid some protesting that has persisted in parts of the city following George Floyds death at the hands of Minneapolis police nearly three weeks ago.
A Chicago police spokesman could not say why officers were forced to go back to the extended shifts, but the directive from top CPD brass comes following the shooting death Friday night of a black man by a police officer in Atlanta.
That shooting, which led to the firing of the officer and the resignation of Atlantas police chief, prompted more protests in that city as intense demonstrations calmed down there nearly three weeks after Floyds death on Memorial Day.
Until further notice, Chicago cops who are on active duty and not on vacation will have to work the 12-hour shifts - a normal shift is about 8 1/2 hours - and come in on their days off, the Chicago police spokesman, Luis Agostini, said Sunday morning.

imwouldmhave expected they would want cops off the streets
you know, safer for blacks to resume killing other blacks without meddlesome cops around
Uh, yes...hello Chief....I’m not feeling well today...I won’t be in.
Better get that overtime in writing-—Los Angeles has had cops on overtime for weeks, and now they are RETROACTIVELY refusing to PAY the overtime.
Bet the State Labor Board is going to be very busy there.
Rumor has is the CPD is conveniently failing to enter overtime claims, even when the papers are submitted.
...for a month minimum.
Better yet, “sorry, Sarge, but I was exposed to Covid and will quarantine for two weeks.”
Yep - opening the door for a stressed out, tired as hell cop to snap and those who order it may face hugh and series liabilities.
I thought they already outlawed the cops? Or is that Minneapolis? 🤗🤗🤣😂
12 hour shifts with 3 days on 2 days off is a new scheduling tool that actually gives cops a bit more total time off. Not really sure how Chicago is implementing this, but it can reduce overtime costs for the municipality as well. It is a bargaining issue in many recent police contracts. Police unions are often in favor of the longer shifts because it gives officers more time with their families by giving them a larger number of days off. However, many old school police administrators feel the long shifts result in exhausted officers who may be prone to make dangerous errors in judgement.
As an officer, there was a time we worked 6 days on, with 2 days off...then as the days rotated forward each week, one week we'd end up working a 5 day week with 1 day off, and then the following weekend we'd have off. Sure wouldn't want to have to work that schedule today.
