Politicians, ugly buildings, and whores all get respectable if they last long enough, explained John Hustons withered magnate Noah Cross in Chinatown. Alas, the same cannot be said of showgirls. Or rather, it cant be said of Showgirls, director Paul Verhoevens infamously atrocious 1995 exploration of the Las Vegas stripping scene.
This is despite the best efforts of You Dont Nomi, a new 25th anniversary documentary by Jeffrey McHale that attempts to rehabilitate Verhoevens widely (and properly) reviled debacle, now considered by some to be cult film. Featuring voiceover by nearly a dozen critics and performers, several of whom have devoted mystifying portions of their adult lives to the worship of Showgirls, McHales film argues thatwell, its hard to say precisely what. The various encomiums offered up for Verhoevens folly frequently contradict one another, and McHale makes little or no effort to bring them into any kind of alignment.
For those in need of refreshing, Showgirls was written by Joe Eszterhas and directed by Verhoeven as a kind of follow-up to their blockbuster 1992 erotic thriller Basic Instinct.

Showgirls was not a great movie...
There are two versions of this movie...R-rated vs. NC-17 rated...
There’s just a lot of bad movies out there. One from 2001 era....Glitter, was just an awful movie with no real script.
I saw that movie a few years ago. After it was over the notion that it may have been the worst movie ever hit me.
Well the worst movie in which they spent more than a few thousand dollars making it. Elizabeth Berkely waa fairly hot.
The worst movie I ever saw was “Surf Nazis Must Die”. In it’s defense, they must have spent very little making it.
Verhoeven has made some ok movies but he is noted for over the top violence. Showgirls is just meh.
Soldier of Orange is a good movie, directed by Verhoeven.
Black Book isn’t bad.
Klaus Nomi?
I do miss cranking up the radio for Rushs homo-updates....
Did he do Basic Instinct? Robocop?
"Alien 51" starring Heidi Fleiss. One critic said he'd rather pour Tobasco in his eyes than watch it again and I agree.
I thought it was alright. I didnt expect to see Gone with the Wind here and if you say the new Star Wars vs Showgirls, I’ll pick Showgirls to watch.
Showgirls was awful?...compared to what? A Coen bros. movie perhaps, but compared to all the other crap that’s put out it was great due to the hot chick factor.
yep and Total Recall
Could never manage to sit through the cable version.
“Nomi” is the name of main character? I thought it was play on Klaus Sperber’s stage name. So, in a way, I guess it “Know Me” is.
I think more people know of him, thanks to Rush Limbaugh.
It was a bad knock-off/reboot of Russ Meyer and Roger Ebert’s adults only film Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.
I admit to trying to buy the album after first hearing Nomi on Limbaugh. I think he said somebody left a tape or whatever on his doorstep.
Went to the local Strawberries at the time, and it wasn’t listed in the store’s printed catalog.
Worst movie I ever saw was Masked and Anonymous and the whole thing seems improvised by people who can’t.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Strawberries pushed artists/songs/labels controlled by Morris Levy (who controlled Strawberries) over other product customers asked for.

Showgirls was a farce. Right up there with the other 1995 film Billy Madison.
