Hi,
I was wondering if other people felt that we seem to be posting very long posts recently.
It's not a huge deal, but sometimes I don't really like reading through a very long post.
Maybe I'm being a stickler but I just wondered if anyone else felt that way.
Thanks! Julie
I love threads like this.
Thanks for the laughs guys. Needed it on a monday morning.
I skip long posts. No matter what subject. Always.
I would agree as to posts that are just paragraph after paragraph of text.
Posts that are actually a compilation/list of facts, information, links all related to a single major topic are different in my book. In their case this is something you only see on FreeRepublic and they reflect some dedicated Freepers willingness to go above and beyond to compile what amounts to mini reference libraries of information on a single major topic.
For them I do wish they had their own special place on Free Republic, like “The Library” maybe. It would in total be/become like FreeRepublic’s great reference library. The basic post could go there, and the Freeper making the post can post a vanity, with a few comments that just links to it over in “The Library”.
But doing that I know would come at some cost and effort by Jim Robinson and his technical support. So I’d have to leave it to Jim. It may not be practical.
I would not even have read your post had it had the proper “Vanity” tag.
I go to the comment page. There are many comments that takes 2-3 pages to get past on a desk top. On my phone forget about it. Only read the OP if the comments make it sound interesting.
Calm down Karen
“skip the article, and go straight to the responses? I hear that a lot of FReepers do that!”
It’s what I do. If any response looks interesting, I’ll go back and find that portion in the article.
You have a choice, you are free to NOT READ long posts.
Did you consider once the alternative of changing your own behavior?
Quit trying to change the behavior of others to satisfy yourself. What you want is wrong headed to me but you are free to do it and I am free to not comply and heretofore IGNORE YOU.
Nope.
Yoy may be a stickler after all. Decide early if you want to read it. If not now...save it for later. If the topic intrigues you...research it first...read post later. A great educational experience.
10-4. Roger and out.
Years ago, I posted a thread on how to post.
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/2718334/posts
If more FReepers posted correctly, we would all enjoy a much more cleaner and easier reading process.
But the real problem is not long posts. But short ones. Threads that are pretty much worthless unless you click over to the link.
But if you are faced with a long long thread. Skip to the conclusion. The last paragraph. Where the author recaps his major points and summarizes his essay.
If there is no conclusion? No summary?
Skip it. Ignore it. Click another thread.
I prefer to type my posts, which forces me to be as concise and precise as possible (two perhaps contradictory goals). It helps me to avoid stream of consciousness infecting my posts with tangents, and helps me to organize what I want to say in a sequence and format that I think makes my thoughts the most compelling they can be.
To me, it's not the length of the post, it's the thought journey that I take the reader on that's the objective.

You weren't here in the days of "close your tags." That was awful.
-PJ
Didn't Nancy Pelosi say we had to pass it to find out what's in it?
It seems that tl;dr is how our government is running, too.
-PJ
i don’t know what that means, lol. I lurked for a long time and don’t remember that phrase.
The problem was that FR coding at the time meant that all future posts from someone else had the same html applied until someone "closed the tag" to stop it.
Eventually, John Robinson added some code to protect this from happening, essentially resetting all the formatting back to defaults at the end of a post to keep unclosed tags from seeping into the next post.
-PJ
that does sound annoying.
Are you speaking of articles posted or comments made to a posted article.
Yes some articles are being posted in full or almost fully,
or is it the comments you are referring to?
Long posts don’t bother me at all.
I am a speed reader.
