Six months after the riots, Times reporters visited some of the people and places touched by the extraordinary events of last spring and on these pages we tell their stories.

Art Washington still can’t get over what happened to him in the weeks after the riots--how he, the son of a Mississippi sharecropper, became a national hero.

I couldn't figure out how to post a two part discussion into one post but if you will view the 28 second video, it will all make sense.
(I hope)🙄

I TRIED TO MAKE IT TOO!

The video is heart breaking but the outcome is much brighter!

The man in that video is Art Washington.

Would you like, (as Paul Harvey use to say) .. The Rest Of The Story?

Art Washington still can’t get over what happened to him in the weeks after the riots--how he, the son of a Mississippi sharecropper, became a national hero.

“It’s changed my whole attitude about people,” he says. “Especially white people.
I was real negative about white people because it seemed all my life they were trying to keep me down.”

Washington marched out of obscurity on the second day of the riots.

Too bad you can’t read the article unless you subscribe. Thanks anyway. The video was heartbreaking.

After I watched that video, I started thinking, and realized, that if Mr. Washington made those comments today, he’d be called an “Uncle Tom”, and be told he’s not black enough.

Did you see the link above your post? That goes to the article.

Lived there at the time and we were all glued to our TVs.. I remember Tammy Bruce saying that she went home, crawled into bed with a bottle of wine! I think she said “with a gun” also but I’m not going to swear to that as it WAS a long time ago...

Yep, tried all the links. Saw the video okay, but any of the other links to the actual story bring up a pop-up window to subscribe for "$98 for 1 year or $1 for 4 weeks." If you click on "home page" at the bottom, it takes you to the home page of the paper, and the same pop-up window appears.

That’s funny - I didn’t even see the video..where did you find that?

Post #2 with the link goes right to the article...

Some really weird things happening. I sent a link to the Vittert story with twitter postings from a bunch of people to another FReeper and they can’t get what I saw...I went back to look and the ones I saw originally are gone between Swalwell and Grinell which is the reason I thought it was fun reading...Swalwell is such a puke and Grinell put him in his place - no match for a guy with brains!

OK I see the video at #1 - boy - if someone like that can’t get through to those looters (and that’s being kind), there’s no chance they’ll ever learn!

The company I worked for at that time in OC had a van that was left in L. A. because it broke down. My daughter worked for the company also and our boss told her he was going to send her with another employee into L. A. to retrieve the van. I told him “in a pig’s eye” she’s going to L. A. I noticed he wasn’t going to do it and he used the company van as his own personal vehicle!! Needless to say, she didn’t go!

Good for you standing up to the boss. He never should have even suggested sending her or anyone else to get the van. If you want it buddy, get it yourself.

Poor Mr. Washington in that short video is heartbreaking. As I said earlier on this thread, after thinking about the video from '92, if he, or any other black person tried to shame the rioters/looters today, they'd be labeled "Uncle Tom's" or not black enough. I hope that Barr follows through with charging the out-of-staters who are crossing the state line to commit arson/looting/property damage. The question is, will the Democrat officials at the city and state level turn over the info on the individuals they've arrested. Former Congressman Keith Ellison is the State A.G., and he's been telling the rioters to target the police. I wonder how the State Police who guard the State buildings, and the Governor's a$$ feel about that.

I recall the Denny’s restaurant head slam menu item. I think Rush referenced it after a truck driver was beat on

That truck driver was Reginald Denny.

He had been driving a company dump truck, delivering sand to a job site.

The truck had no radio and Denny didn’t know that a riot had started.

Well, he got stopped and pulled from his truck and beaten so badly that his skull was busted into over 90 pieces with some pieces embedded into his brain.
(claw hammer and brick)

A permanent crater remains in his forehead despite efforts to correct it.

The guy suffered major damage.

I don’t think I made it clear that the incident with the company van was the week of the riots...I had in mind 1992 but didn’t bother to point that out. DUH!!

I didn’t know arrests had been made in Minneapolis. That surprises me. I did see some were made in Bakersfield and somewhere in TX...There’s a lot to cover so I don’t know what all I’ve read today. I’ll watch FOX in a bit and see if there’s anything brewing in L. A.

Any state with that much democrat political power doesn’t stand a chance or rather - normal/decent people in any of those states don’t have a chance. Remember when we used to talk about the long, hot summers when rioting was so common place in the ‘60’s....Looks like another one! THEY pretty much have been given permission to do as they wish after this week, haven’t they? Common sense out the window!!!

I remember Denny’s restaurant had a Grand Slam item on their menu years ago but I doubt Rush would have made a joke about it. If he did, that was in poor taste for sure!

CNN has reported people were arrested in Minneapolis. Found this in one online article: "St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter said every person who was arrested in the city Friday night was from out of state. 'We don’t know these folks,' he said."

Also while doing a search, I found this: "Union bus drivers in multiple cities are refusing to drive buses dispatched for police, issuing statements of solidarity and demanding justice in George Floyd’s murder." Of course they won't be fired.

"The guy suffered major damage."

And at the trial, he hugged the mothers of the defendants, claiming they were "just bad guys." He went on Phil Donahue's show, and shook hands with one of his attackers...Henry Keith Watson, who was acquitted of attempted murder, but convicted of misdemeanor assault. Watson was supposed to have apologized, and Denny supposedly forgave him. Phil Donahue, trying to incite division said to Denny: ″We’d just be a lot happier if you’d be a little more bitter.″

I watched TV quite late last night. I saw a bus that was loaded with the driver standing outside and the report was he refused to drive the bus that was full of those arrested. I saw so many cities that I truly don’t remember which city - but I think it was NYC..

The one who threw the cinder block at Denny’s head was Damien Williams, if I remember correctly. I haven’t read up on that in a long time. He did go to prison...I will have to google it.
