Weekly Garden Thread - May 30-June 5, 2020
May 30, 2020 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 05/30/2020 5:51:59 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

can’t wait for a toasted tomato sandwhich, mayo, salt loads of pepper-

BLT season is my favorite time of the year. Mine are getting a late start due to the cold wet weather earilier in the month.

I don't expect to pick a tomato before the 4th of July.

I should probably start stocking up on bacon now. Just in case.

My asparagus and onions are coming up nicely.

The potatoes are getting a slow start but some are showing.

My tomatoes are ready to be put in except for the weather and cold temps.

Lower Midwest here. I am an apartment dwelling container and windowsill gardener. I started with 2 pots in a parking spot. I know have a south facing porch and a good western facing windowsill. We’ve had a lot of rain here. Today, thought was glorious and so nice to sit surrounded by free. For my morning tea. One of my lavender plants is blooming and I am able to pick blooms. The pot sits under the roof overhang and isn’t getting the rainwater. The lavender loves this, but not the mint that’s in the same pot. It got too dry and actually died. That’s right, I actually killed mint. I also picked some full bloom flowers For my desk and cut the stems too short. Thank goodness for sherry glasses!

What a breath of fresh air you are princess B. My garden is also finally taking off and it gives me much inner peace and satisfaction in this time of societal chaos.

Sweet corn is up! Once we got our little patch planted I echoed Grandpa and said “And now it can rain.” Tomatoes and peppers growing too although they got some wind damage from strong, cold east wind several days week before last.

Working on flowers for DD’s wedding August. She didn’t want me to try and grow anything in case it didn’t turn out, but I figure some extra’s can’t hurt.

We are getting a over abundance of rain causing some flooding in the NW corner of Calif. We will probably lose a picking of the strawberries...

Missouri has had an abundance of rain this month. Finally we’re seeing a break.
The lower branches on our tomatoes don’t look good so I’ll trim them tomorrow.

We had a “bad” raccoon in a live trap today. Snarling and growling. I didn’t see any foaming at the mouth but decided to take no chances...

Norways. Invasive. Not good for the forest, regardless of what state you live in. I sawed 5 more this evening. The largest was 5 inch trunk, 60 feet. Bout 10 years old. Made a nice crashing sound.

The elm and linden underneath it will get some sun now.
