Are you the type of gal who demands to speak to the manager when you feel you’ve been wronged? You just might be a “Karen.”
Karen is the latest in a growing line of internet memes poking fun at real-life archetypes. Names such as Karen, Becky and Chad have been co-opted to call out social faux pas online, think: calling the police to shut down a kids’ lemonade stand because they don’t have a permit, or as slangy put-downs like, “Don’t be such a Becky.”
Other names have become so entangled in pop culture that they’ve taken on a new meaning: Who can think of anyone but the Kardashians when they hear “Kim”?
But while the internet directory is fun, real-life Karens (or Beckys, Debbies, Chads and Kyles) bear the brunt of the jokes.
Here’s some of the names ruined by the internet, where they came from, and what the people named before the meme think about their online personas.
KAREN
“Karen” has become social media shorthand meaning a middle-aged white woman — potentially with an asymmetric haircut a la 2009 Kate Gosselin — who makes a big fuss, and is not-so-blissfully ignorant. While the origins of “Karen” are oft debated, some point to Dane Cook’s 2005 bit about the lamest gal in a group of friends being named Karen, others to the “Mean Girls” character played by Amanda Seyfried who is admonished for asking pal Cady (Lindsay Lohan) how she can be from Africa if she’s white. Some view it as a righteous motivator for the creation of Black Twitter — the world wide web knows a Karen when it sees one.
One recent example of a Karen? A woman brawling with the Red Lobster staff, reduced because of the pandemic,

Saw this story on the 4Chan Food & Cooking board a couple of weeks ago. I think she lasted 55 responses to her original post on Medium before throwing in the towel. The 4Chan thread had all of them. Lots of “Karen” references.

Are any of us safe from having our name applied to some...thing??? LOL, I think that has already happened to me anyway, but not as nasty as being called a “Karen”!

Karen is also the name of the censor for You Tube. But Karens are like Mrs. Kravitz in their bet light. And Anne Frank’s neighbors in reality. They are fascists. Just waiting for their CCP overlords to reveal themselves. They don’t have the nerve to wear a swastika. But they will dutifully follow the orders of those who do wear a swastika.
with that crappy attitude Hawaii is going to be broke in no time. I will literally never go to Hawaii again with that kind of attitude. I have been to each island at least three times for at least a week but I have better places to go than one who hates my white haole money.
I pretty much gave up on going to Hawaii after attending a luau on the east coast of Kauai were all they talked about in the presentation were the ‘golden people of Hawaii’ - the native Hawaiians, the Indians, Chinese, and Japanese while white people didn’t even exist or rate a mention. To hell with them, they can starve and try to eat the lava rocks.

Some folks used to just call Karen’s a B—ch. Before that became unfashionable. Maybe we should bring it back?
Social justice resorts to very female forms of bullying and manipulation for social control. We didn’t “hit” you. We’ve shamed, shunned, berated your kids, isolated and outright bullied you ... but we didn’t HIT you or carry guns, so it isn’t really abuse.
We’ve seen the weaponization of the mean girls from high school and naggy old women for political purposes. Watch them like mindful mothers. Educate them, and if they refuse, berate them. Someone doesn’t do what you want, do anything you want including calling in the lynch mob and shaming them online.
Liberal bullies are worse than Puritans because Puritans had limits on their shaming, shunning and social abuse. Partially out of Christian morals, partially because they had to live with the person afterward.
