Glad you are enjoying them. It’s a long way to Appomattox. I hope I have enough luck and stamina to get there.

I commend to all on this thread, this recreation of Lincoln's Cooper Union speech just 3 months prior. Spoken by actor Sam Waterston on 5 May 2004 at Cooper Union, he was able to voice-act the recitation into the Illinois/Midwest accent and higher voice register that supposedly matches Lincoln's voice. Oh, to have contemporary recordings from him & Daniel Webster & other such giants.

This speech, speaking to fatal flaws of 'Popular Sovereignty' in Federal Territories as espoused by his home state rival, Sen. Stephen A Douglas, is absolutely AMAZING. This b/w video is 88 minutes but the 1st 6 minutes is, IMHO, skippable. At 7 minutes, the Lincoln scholar, Harold Holzer, author of a 2004 book on this speech and its positive results for Mr. Lincoln, spends a very worthwhile 9 minutes setting the stage for this vetting performance by candidate Lincoln. You then get 68+ minutes of a bravura performance, both the original and this modern day replication. ENJOY!
