...on April 16th, Jill Nelson, a 67-year-old writer, left her apartment on Riverside Drive to run a few essential errands.(snip)... she passed a boarded-up storefront, and wrote Trump = Plague in pink chalk. Seconds later, she was in handcuffs, she told us.
Before I could step back and see my handiwork, two police SUVs roared up on either side of me, and blocked me in, Nelson told the Rag. Four officers jumped out: What are you doing? Why are you doing that? Do you own this building? Do you have a weapon?
They roughly cuffed me, took my purse, and shoved me into the back of an SUV. I was taken to the 33rd Precinct and put in a cell at about 1 p.m. I was never read my rights.(snip)
Nelson has been charged with graffiti, a misdemeanor, and was held at the 33rd Precinct for more than five hours.(snip)...they werent going to let me out because I didnt have a picture ID,(snip)
During a phone call that Nelson claims was cut short by an NYPD officer, she was unable to communicate her whereabouts to her husband, Flores A. Forbes,(snip)
Eventually, Forbes arrived, having given up on the squad car and determined his wife was almost certainly at the 33rd Precinct.
They had a plastic evidence bag and I saw my license, from my cell, Nelson said.(snip)
It wasnt until 6:37 p.m. that Nelson was able to leave the precinct, and not without a stern reminder as to her impending day in court, she said.
When I left, the desk sergeant, who was of African-American descent, said, you better show up, because if you dont were going to come to your house and arrest you.
On her way home, Nelson noticed that Trump = Plague had already been smudged away.

Hubby Black Panther leader...spent some time in prison
Someone should have added “Cure” at the end...
What kind of old lady defaces the property of other people? Graffiti is normally done by juvenile delinquents.
When is this 67 year old tart going to grow up?
Meanwhile, nobody else has suggested they throw in her in jail for for the rest of her life. You did.
It actually happened to me and a friend quite a while ago.
This the arrogance of self entitlement no matter the reason and who you are. Pox on all your houses.
I have an MS in park design and resource management. One of our textbooks mentioned that vandalism was almost unknown prior to WWII.
I still wonder what happened to the post war generations to cause that.
Bringing pink chalk to run some errands is intent for write some illegal graffiti. She would have still been arrested if she was a KKK member scrawling “Moochelle Obugger is a tranny” on SomeOne else’s property.
Writers always carry pink chalk you never know when the muse will alight on your shoulder and you need to get your deepest thoughts written down quickly before they vanish into the void. Isnt it obvious thats what happened here?
Those rowdy Roman soldiers wrote some frisky graffiti on Hadrian’s wall.

Yes, it might be an annoyance and even an encroachment on private property. But multiple police? Handcuffs? Jail? It's a dangerous overreaction. At most the cop should have told her to smudge it out and not do it again, unless it's her own property.
I’m with you. The story somehow has a Juicy Smellitt kind of smell.
Ima go out on a limb here and say that 90% of her story is likely bullschitt
I’m thinking a fake hate crime story .... NYPD’s finest wouldn’t waste their time on some simple minded graffiti when there are single sale cigarette sellers and other more profitable crimes to pursue.
Why was it important for her to tell us this?
Oh, bull crap! Tyranny? Give me a break. She defaced public property and got caught. Case closed.
I’m sure Jimmy Acosta has already started a gofundme page for this aging hippy.
Spankings by principals in schools were banned.
I do. Because I am a free American.
No laws violated by cops. She doesn’t get rights read unless they question her.
5 hours in jail and a misdemeanor for property vandalism; hopefully a fine. Take it and be thankful.
If you mess with the cops you can do 5 hours or cooperate and get out in 1.
