Curtis Sittenfeld likes to imagine the sex lives of presidents.(snip)
She does it again in Rodham, her new novel, to be published on May 19. I wont soon forget the scene in which Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham distract themselves while driving through Arkansas in a way that redefines joy ride.
Please dont get pulled over, Hillary cautions him.
Did this happen? Who knows? The fascination of the first third of Rodham is its weave of history and hypothesis as it chronicles the initial meeting of Bill and Hillary at Yale Law School, their courtship and her migration to Arkansas when he makes an unsuccessful run for Congress. Embellished details are grafted onto established events.
The fascination of the rest of Rodham is its whole-cloth divergence from the record. Sittenfelds novel asks: What if Hillary and Bill hadnt married? What if her professional arc had been entirely her own?
Its an ingenious conceit, because it gets to the central paradox of real-life Hillary, the initial reason she became such a mesmerizing, polarizing, meta-cultural Rorschach. Shes a feminist trailblazer who first arrived at stratospheric celebrity because of her husband and was perceived and analyzed largely in terms of her relationship with him. Shes a voice for equal opportunity who kept biting her tongue.(snip)
In Sittenfelds novel, she and Bill break up around the time the actual couple got engaged. Theyll intersect anew, but Id be spoiling Rodham to explain how, why and with what result.(snip)
But Im on firm columnist ground to note the aptness of this books appearance now, mid-pandemic, in a season of what-ifs. What if President Trump, early on, had taken more assertive action to contain the coronaviruss spread? What if someone else were at the helm?
What would Hillary have done?

Yep, or maybe Associate Director at some no name not for profit.
What if Hillary and Bill hadnt married?
No difference for Chelsea Rodman-Hubble.
She would be a sleaze bag lawyer in Chicago, probably disbarred or in prison maybe went to Berkeley to teach.
Bill would be like my 50 year old professor at university - at Fat Dogs Rear (college town bar with $3 pitchers of Budweiser - Jerry Jeff Walker was on the jukebox) and the prof always left the gang early with a parting prize around 20 years old.
And the world was then and now would be a better place.
Ok, I'm done.
Shed still be bussing tables.
Disbarred ‘Slip and Fall” Lawyer, probably turned to blackmail and jailed like Avenatti
If Bill hadn't married Hillary, he would still have become governor of Arkansas, but wouldn't have become president. He needed somebody to light a fire under him and give him the focus that he didn't have on his own.
Think FDR and Eleanor. If Franklin had married somebody he actually liked and got along with, he wouldn't have had the drive to get to the top. He needed somebody a little distant and off-putting to keep him going and so did Bill,.
She wanted to be a DC lawyer but failed the DC bar exam in spectacular fashion. Of 817 applicants, 551 passed.
If not for the politically connected Arkansas wagon hitch named Bill Clinton, she would have ended up a lawyer in whatever state had a bar exam easy enough for her to pass.
She woulda stayed with Web Hubble and had a few more ugly kids besides Chelsea...
I think she would have been involved in this;

Little Rock in the mid 80s got the nickname “Slam City” for all of the shady bond deals going on there. Can’t find a better article.
WTF would hit that? She is so ugly that she wouldn’t want to hit it. Liberal women are such a mistake of nature.
“They both would have ended up nobodies.”
I understand your point, and I know you didn’t mean it this way, but I have to take issue with the concept of a ‘nobody’. There are plenty of wonderful people in the world, who give of themselves to help others, and who are empathic and caring. They are not ‘nobodies’, and I would put their achievements at a much higher level than probably most politicians - irrespective of how many hours of TV time they’ve logged.
Hillary would have failed in politics, just like Michealle Obama. No personalities, no likeability factor. Just a bitch and a guy who wants to be one!
For a woman that the left worships she's wholly without any accomplishments of her own. The only reason she became a senator was because she was married to Bill, likewise her stint as Secretary of State.
Heck, she wouldn't have even ended up on the WalMart board if she wasn't married to the governor.
One day there'll be a woman president, but hopefully it'll be one that got there on her own merit instead of because they were married to a corrupt political superstar. Hillary Clinton never had a job that wasn't because she rode Bill's coattails.
What if Bill had been raised by his real dad instead of being killed in a car wreck?
So this creature wrote a lesbian fantasy novel. How delightful. I bet it’ll fly off the shelves.
