Alexa Groat got the surprise of her life this week while on a deep-sea fishing trip off the southwest coast of Florida.
Whale sharks can grow up to 40 feet long and weigh an average of 20 tons. (Source: Alexa Groat) About 12 miles offshore, her group discovered a giant whale shark swimming in the Gulf of Mexico.
We were in shock! I've lived in Florida my whole life and never have I seen anything like it! Groat said. Truly the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.
She was out with a group celebrating her sisters birthday.
Groat said she was tempted to get in the water with the creature recognized as the worlds largest fish.
Oh my gosh, yes! It was so peaceful, and it coasted alongside the boat for a good while, she said. We all wanted to go for a swim, but we were afraid of what might be swimming along below it.

Despite their big size, theyre not dangerous to humans. They eat by filtering tiny plankton and fish eggs out of the water.
See the video at the site.
I’ve been nowhere near florida.
What’s Hillary doing in Florida?
Hey yall get snow this morning?
More than we did all winter :)
Nah that this far in/out??
Upstate did I think.
But it was Cold for May.
It’s global climate warming/cooling/both/change...er, one of those :)
Yukyukyuk
Didn’t they have anybody on board they didn’t like too much that could have been thrown into the water for scale?
The Grouper Troopers would be there in an instant to bust them for that.
Now thats funny
Then again, I would turn to if I went outside
Florida is awesome.
I’ve gotten to pet manatees as they swim along my kayak, flying fish and dolphins swimming along side our boat, grouper the size of tanks, just all around cool and laid back :)
That sounds incredible.
This Global Warming, Climate Change and dp0622’s birthday coming up on the 13th has everybody screwed up.
:)
LOL
52. good grief.

52 cards in a deck. Coincidence? I think not unless you count you as the Joker.... :)

Wimps!
I do!!
Now you can say that you have completed one week for every year that you have been alive.
I think that is how it supposed to go. You are SO MUCH OLDER AND WISER than me. Is that correct?
In that bottom photo the manatee took that drain plug into his mouth and dragged my girlfriend’s boat, slowly, through the water.
Pretty cool. The Florida version of a Nantucket sleigh ride?
