The vast majority of Americans can return to their favorite local golf course. That includes Illinois residents except those who want to play in Chicago.
Mayor Lori Lightfoots office has ordered the closing of the three Cook County Forest Preserve courses within city limits Indian Boundary, Billy Caldwell and Edgebrook.
A visit to the ForestPreserveGolf.com website yields an interesting mix: The eight courses outside the city limits, such as River Oaks and Joe Louis, are taking tee times.
But a click on the other three yields the message: Temporarily closed Per City of Chicago Department of Health we are closed for the remainder of May. Please check our website, social media and email for re-opening information.
Earlier this week, the city also ordered the closing of Harborside International Golf Center, the upscale, 36-hole, 400-acre facility along the Bishop Ford Freeway with views of the skyline. All 160 golfers who expected to play Thursday were issued refunds.
Gov. J.B. Pritzkers office last week allowed Illinois courses to open under strict safety guidelines that include 15-minute intervals between tee times, no access to driving ranges, no groups larger than twosomes and no carts without a doctors note or handicap placard.
Why the disconnect between the mayors office and the governors office?
A spokesperson for the mayors office gave no explanation Thursday about the closing of Harborside.

True dat.
I can't express what needs to happen to folks like this cause I'd probably be banned.
Didnt Chicago plow under a municipal airport a few years back?
Buckwheat’s fascist sister has spoken.
She has no jurisdiction over county property. So is the County o.k. with this?
Horrible, painful deaths. After days of torture.
She’s a racist.
Bet she gets re-elected by a big majority, because I would guess anyone not institutionalized will have departed Abe home.
Apparently none of Lard Butt's limousine liberal country club pals do their golfing within city limits. Those cheap city clubs are for the mere peasants.
But thankfully for them, Shoreacres in Lake Bluff (an elite five star country club that allows members by invite only) is now open for business!
Guess mayor light in the head does not golf.
Banning golf carts or limiting them to one person would (possibly) be reasonable. Requiring masks and social distancing would be reasonable. Closing outdoor recreation rather than placing some restrictions is shockingly stupid.
Lil’ Groot is acting more and more like Eva Peron.
Time for the Chicago police to go on strike and inform the nazi mayor that she’s on her own for protection.
The courses named in the article are operated by the park district or the county forest preserves. Most have retained private firms to operate the courses since the golf managers were more efficient than government employees. Indirectly, brain dead Lightfoot’s edict has cost the local governments money.
Most of the municipal courses are in formerly white neighborhoods. The county courses, Billy Caldwell, Edgebrook and Indian Boundary, are in good neighborhoods.
Yes - but Harborside is next to Pullman/Roseland - The Old South Shore Country Club is outright dangerous. Joe Louis and River Oaks doesn’t need comment.
South Shore is not as well maintained as it was during its glory years as a private club, but the Chicago Police Department has a substantial presence there since the mounted police stable their horses there. Once you are on the property things are usually okay. I have heard bad things about safety at Jackson Park. River Oaks was a muddy mess the last time that I golfed there.
I’d guess her butt too...........
Some of my Polish friends went to South Shore to Golf last Summer- They were not treated very well. The Park District guy kept asking them where they were from - they told him the North Side. The Park District guy said - you don’t have any Golf Courses up there?
I tried to warn them.
