A potentially record-breaking snowstorm is headed for the Northeast this weekend, and it could bring historic snowfall totals to the inner Northeast and New England.
A storm system barreling into the Northeast will clash with winter cold associated with the polar vortex on Friday, bringing the potential for heavy, wet snow across the inner Northeast. At the same time, the rest of the I-95 corridor could see heavy rain.
Snowfall totals could range from a dusting to more than a foot in isolated areas of the extreme north of New England. Either way, a snowstorm in May could shatter May snowfall records.
Cities that could see snow include Binghamton, Syracuse, Rochester, and Albany in New York; Burlington, Vermont; and Scranton, Pennsylvania.
Temperatures would become more characteristic of March than of May, and regions of the western U.S. would be going through a heat wave while the eastern U.S. would be going through a cold snap.
Forty-five million people in the upper Midwest and the Appalachians are under a freeze watch, which is likely to expand.
The cold air is likely to expand into the Deep South, and by Saturday morning, 75 million people will wake up to temperatures that are colder than it was on Christmas Day in 2019. Only a quarter of the country was covered in snow around that time.

Where’s my bleeping global warming, Algore?!
Cuomo is a lucky expletive-deleted. Not too many will be champing at the bit to do anywhere during yucky weather...
Next month news - “Second hottest May in recorded history”
I remember snow on Easter on Long Island. The ‘spring’ back there is not really very warm some years.
NWS has freeze warnings all the way to the Tennessee and Carolina mountains.
The global warmists will soon begin to claim that the reason its been so cold is that the demand for oil collapsed.
LOL........
Good one.
Gonna break a lot of tree lines and power lines.
In New York they will arrest kids for sleigh riding. Snowball fights will be treated as felonies. Meanwhile they are releasing sex offenders from prison.
GORE-BULL WARMING!
We’re all going to die.
Sheesh, we had flurries on and off all day here nw of Detroit. FYI the latest I’ve seen snow was Mother’s Day, May 19th sometime in the late ‘70s or early ‘80’s. Nothing stuck to the ground. Ridiculous. Where’s Al No Controlling Legal Authority Gore, the warming guy, when you need him? Conman in the Balance slithered into the sunset after the Tipper smacker. Screwball couldn’t even carry his home state. HOORAY Tennessee!
A few years ago we had frost in parts of New Jersey overnight from May 31st to June 1st. It was the first time in recorded history that NJ had frost in June.
The tree lines will grow back. Now the power lines will take
some human effort to restore.
See, we shut down the economy for a couple of months, drive much less, and the temps plunge.
Uh oh. The Economic Shutdown has completely reversed Globull
Warming and thrown the World into a new Ice Age.
Didnt NJ have a pretty cold April this year?
Years ago, my DH and took a course in weather forecasting. ( we sailed) Just before Easter, the meteorologist said that those who played golf would have a good day for it on Easter Sunday. Well— it snowed Easter morning. At the next class, the teacher explained what happened. That’s when I realized that weather people can explain the weather best —— after the fact!!
It’s been snowing here in CNY for the last couple hours.
Just your typical Mother’s Day snowfall.
I want my global warming.
