As we all await in our homes hoping for some good news so we can resume our once active lives, there has never been a better time to reflect on the glory days of Rock. Attempting to pick an all time top 10 list has proven a great excuse to listen to some of the all time great rock anthems, but has also brought the pain of leaving legends of rock without the ranking they deserve.
There are far too many apologies to even begin listing here, although The Who and the Jimi Hendrix experience were the next two to be chosen. The desire to throw in a deserved left field selection like The Bee Gees(pre Disco of course) or tragically underrated Australian gems like The Skyhooks and Cold Chisel was unfortunately thwarted due to the quality bands that would be forced to be left out.
The criteria for this list came down to a few key factors, including worldwide recognition, the quantity of quality singles and albums produced, the band's overall impact and influence, and the ability to be embraced by a wide audience. While Top 40 success was not the sole criteria here, it was definitely taken into consideration, as was the band's ability to create music that has lasted the test of time.
So while this writer hopes you get some Satisfaction from this list, please Don't Cry on the comments section and learn to just Let it Be if you disagree.

Author's picks (NOT MINE):
10. Fleetwood Mac
9. U2
8. Guns 'N' Roses
7. Queen
6. The Doors
5. AC/DC
4. Pink Floyd
3. The Beatles
2. Led Zeppelin
1. The Rolling Stones
1. ELO
2. The Moody Blues
3. The Who
4. Black Sabbath
5. Heart
6. The Eagles
7. Deep Purple
8. The Doobie Brothers
9. Kansas
10. Led Zeppelin
I will sign up for 7 out of your 10. I was never into Sabbath, or Zepp, or Purple much. I’d drop one of those for Chicago.
Not sure how The Beach Boys don’t make such a list. Brian Wilson’s genius and 36 top-forty hits between 1961 and 1988.
Heart !!!! Narf. Try Aerosmith
Boston. My all time favorite.
The Beatles were a rock band?
I like U2 (well, most of it before Zooropa) but I would NOT classify them as classic rock.
Joy Division.
I do like the Beach Boys, but they are not in the same league as The Eagles, The Who, or Heart.
Yeah, I didn't get that either.
I knew people who listened to Aerosmith in 1975. At the time (Jr High School) I figured they were a cheap Rolling Stones knock-off. Nothing special. But here it is more than 40 years later and they do seem like major Classic Rock stars.
The Beatles were a rock band?
I wonder about definitions too.
How do we define “rock”?
Is Elvis Presley considered rock? Is he not on this list because he was an individual singer and not part of a rock group? Or is he not considered rock in the first place?
I like AC/DC as well.
Brian Wilson is a musical genius but the Beach Boys were more Pop Rock.
Say What? 😁😁
I understand it’s your opinion and of course others will chime in where they think you’re right or wrong.
But there is no definition (yours or others) of the term.
So of course there’s going to be even more dissension.
No Cream?
I’d put the Eagles over the Doors, Queen and Guns and Roses. Queen is more popular now in hindsight than they were at their peak.
If Terry Kath hadn’t accidently killed himself, Chicago should have been on the list.
