Every New Car You Can Still Buy with a Manual Transmission
Car and Driver ^ | 11-22-2019 | Noah Joseph

Think the manual transmission is a dying breed? Guess what? You're right. Sales of electric cars recently surpassed those with three pedals. And since earlier this year, when we last revised this list, several stick-shift-equipped models have been dropped from the U.S. market, either because the option or the entire model line has been discontinued. Most notably, the Cadillac ATS-V is gone, and Jaguar no longer offers a six-speed for its rowdy F-type.

But here's the good news. There are more than 30 cars available in the U.S. that come with a manual gearbox. (A handful of sport-utes come with them, too, but we covered those in a separate list.)

If it's a row-it-yourself new car you're after, this list will help you find it. Here's hoping the next time we have to update this story, we’ll be adding entries.

Some call it a “mansmission”.

I was hoping one day to see one of those new-fangled six-speeds on the column. Did some psychopathic hard-left bureaucrat regulate them out of existence?

Saab 96 also had a “4 on the tree” with an unusual “N’ pattern. Pull out , back, and up for reverse.

The basic 64 Mustang came with a six cylinder and a 3 on the floor. It was sporty yet inexpensive. I think the floor mounted transmission was actually cheaper to build than the 3 on the column.

Yes, it might stab you in an accident.

After I tore my achilles and spent a few weeks in a boot for my left foot, I got to be really good at shifting without the clutch.

My daughters roommate bought a VW with a manual but didn’t really know how to drive it well. I took her out and showed her a few tricks, including clutchless shifting.

She called her brother to tell her what she learned. He was the one that taught her originally and couldn’t believe her till she showed him.

My first car was a 1966 VW, and the first stick I drove a lot. After a time, I got a ‘68 van which used to break a lot of clutch cables, so sometimes I’d drive a week or two before getting around to fixing it. Just easy on the gas coming out of gear, match revs, and slip into the next gear up or down.

Once I was going mineral collecting with some friends in an older Audi, and the driver said the clutch was going out (linkage, wouldn’t disengage), so we’d have to turn back. I taught him how to shift without the clutch, and all was well. That was in the days before that stupid safety switch that wouldn’t let you start up in gear, though.

My vibe was a 2006 too. At one point me and both my daughters had Vibe’s. Mine was the only manual.

One still has hers. My elderly neighbors wife died a few weeks ago. She had a 2008. Hasn’t been moved in a long time. Only 50,000 miles.

I told him today that I might be interested if he decides to sell it.

Besides double clutching, I learned how to shift military 4x4 trucks without using the clutch. I am sure the slow spinning gears and low ratios helped, but it could be done, using the clutch only for starting.

Most cars I tried it on did not work very well, probably because the rpm dropped too fast.

Did get my Corvette home with out clutch once this way after the POS GM clutch linkage broke.

I was the only driver in our fleet of 10 bus drivers who did not have an accident that year! Only the Good LORD in Heaven above was watching over this poor, lack of experience, kid. It was a fun year. I drove the football team a few games along with two other guys.

Great story! Thanks for sharing...

If it was a manual, I’d be all over it. My daughter has an older Vibe, even the same color. She might want it.
