Iranian Embassy hostages being funnelled through smoke to safety next door 40 years after siege

Pictures of SAS soldiers abseiling down the walls of the Iranian Embassy moments before they rescued hostages inside have become synonymous with the regiment.

But ahead of Tuesday’s 40th anniversary of the assault, which made the elite regiment a household name, rarely seen images of a different part of the daring mission have emerged – and nor was that without its own intense drama.

Our pictures show the 19 freed hostages being funnelled through the smoke out of the embassy in central London and into the safety of a holding area in the garden of the building next door.

Seeing the pictures just makes the story more immediate. Well, 40 years past immediate.

Have you seen the movie THE FINAL OPTION? The film’s producer was inspired to make the film after he watched the SAS operation against the embassy...

It was released in UK as WHO DARES WINS...The movie came out in 1982...

I have not actually seen the movie...But, I saw the VHS box at some video rental place...

The back of my mind is itching, but I can’t put a mental tendril on the memory. If I haven’t seen it, I’d want to. I’ll track it down. Thanks for the suggestion.

The former leader of the SAS Blue Team - at 70 years of age he still looks like someone you would NOT want to F with.

It came to light recently that the one terrorist who was taken alive has since been released from prison and granted political asylum in Britain; given a free house, free benefits for life, and a big compensation payout for the psychological stress caused at the time of his capture.
Meanwhile, the soldier who captured him was living destitute and homeless on the streets - entitled to nothing from the state.

A sad story...I thought that United Kingdom had programs to help such poor people...United Kingdom has more social welfare programs than United States...

But of course there is a whole government subsidised industry based around making sure certain groups are helped to get everything...
while the authorities seem to go out of their way to deny others...
The case I mentioned was so embarrassing, the authorities relented and made sure a home was found for the soldier as well.

Not always though - even sadder was the case recently of an ex-soldier who simply starved to death at home when the authorities cut off all his benefits.

I'm sure in both cases that PTSD or other mental health problems meant that the veterans didn't turn up for welfare appointments or such like; but of course that should be no excuse.
