The Air Force confirms to WWL-TV that a part of one of the B-52s participating in the America Strong flyover today fell off the Stratofortress while over New Orleans, crashing to the ground.

No one was hurt, and the air-worthiness of the plane was not affected as it flew on to do its Baton Rouge flyover, and then returned to base.

The Air Force says the part, an access hatch, landed on private property.

Used to have nukes stored just NE of the north-south runway at Lake Mead Base (Area 2). Always thought that it was a Broken Arrow waiting to happen.

A million pounds of parts bolted together flying around (In loose formation) over any state at any given time.

Fixed it. :-)

That we are still flying planes decades old, designed in the late 40s after WWII , falling apart in the air, is symbolic of the state of the country. At least we were able to build a whole 21 B-2s over thirteen years of production. /s

Air Force is down to 20 B-2s, 62 B-1s and 76 B-52s..

I was started in 52 and ended up being Born in 53.

Most of my parts are still attached but some of them don’t work like they used to.

Memo from Base Commander:

“I don’t care what the city smells like, don’t empty or dispose of the honey buckets over New Orleans:”

Parts would fall off of you if you were that old in airplane years ,LOL

...

Yep, but this seems to be the result of sloppy maintenance.

Depends on which access hatch. If it was the crew access hatch the guys in the hell hole had an e-ride.

= = =

2020 - 1952 = 68

New math, I guess.

My most cherished underway memories was getting hold of the message board and finding the “Things That Fell From Aircraft” messages. They were the best!

I was ballparking how old the planes were.

Didn't realize I'd have to give specifics.

B-52H is the model currently in service.

The H model entered service in 1961.

I'll let you look up serial numbers or production numbers.

So your math is incorrect based on those facts.
