The Swedish city of Lund is to spread chicken manure in its central park in an effort to deter crowds gathering for a festival.
Tens of thousands of people usually descend on southern city to celebrate Walpurgis Night, which is marked across Scandinavia.
But officials want to keep people away because of the coronavirus outbreak.
There is no lockdown in Sweden, where data show most people have taken to voluntary social distancing.
"Lund could very well become an epicentre for the spread of the coronavirus on the last night in April," the chairman of the local council's environment committee, Gustav Lundblad, told the Sydsvenskan newspaper.
Defending the decision to spread a ton of chicken manure in the park, he said: "We get the opportunity to fertilise the lawns, and at the same time it will stink and so it may not be so nice to sit and drink beer."
The origins of Walpurgis Night date back to pagan celebrations of spring.

Fast on his feet?
Running Back or should have been?
I’ve dipped out many a hog manure open pit with a dragline. You learn mighty quick not to splatter it when you dump a bucketful
Nothing was as bad as working near a million chicken egg farm when they filled 5000 gallon truck tankers with liquid chicken Schiff and just opened the valve and drove around the field upwind of me
I don’t know, I can’t remember how that story ends (it is secondhand, became town lore for a while!)
Ahhh! The joys of farm living!
[Chicken Schiff is absolutely the worst smelling farm animal crap there is]
To be fair, a yardful of chickens is nothing like the Schiff from a million of them on one farm when they clean out their manure pit containments
In north Georgia every so often you can be cruising down the road and come across a chicken house being cleaned out and BAM that ammonia will hit you like a nasty wave.

I can’t argue that
a local guy the next county over has gotten insanely rich by providing a service for municipalities here and in Iowa to pump the waste from sewage treatment plants and knife it into farmground using those big wheel trucks
They try to keep the smell down, but sometimes it goes in a bit too much at a time and wafts downwind
Had a friend that took someone’s chicken coop scrapings and spread them on his lawn for fertilizer. 1. Smelled horrible for a week; 2. All kinds of crazy weeds sprouted up soon after. Took him a year to get it back in control.
Second worst. Pig is worse. Liquid pig litter will do the job maybe too much.
Stink in order from least to worst...
Horse
Cow
human
chicken
pig
But it all stinks.
...................................................
You sure seem to know your shit!
I was raised on a farm! Raised pigs and chickens and cows and horses. Soon learned to distinguish what I smelled by the stench of the odor. Never forgot the smell.
Now I live within a few miles of a human sewage treatment plant, and some farmers spread it on their land. It has a sickening “sweet” smell to it.
Raised around it, shoveled it, hauled it, spread it. I know it so well my name is associated with it!
On the other hand I have no problem with dog or cat poo except when I step in it and it squishes between my toes.
That started to smell pretty good after a little humidity or rain.
That would be a shicken chit thing to do!
