Student Who Grew Her Own Canoe Out of Mushroom Thinks Fungus is Our Best Ally in Climate Change

“Mushrooms are here to help us—they’re a gift,” Ayers told NBC. “There’s so much we can do with them beyond just food; it’s so limitless. They’re our biggest ally for helping the environment.”

The canoe is made of mycelium—the dense, fibrous, underground material that links together the various fruiting parts (the toadstools we see on the ground or our dinner plates).

Well, there’s plenty of fungus among us. They go by the name of Democratis fungilingus.

I know that video all too well.

You may need to explain it to some of our FRiends on this thread.

That canoe looks like it can barely float. Personally, I’d rather have my mushrooms with a steak.

The lady on the right doesn’t so much look scared as she’s looking like she’s trying to scarf down a ‘shroom before she’s attacked.

I didn’t think you’re supposed to put toad stools on your dinner plate. I thought they weren’t edible.

100-pound canoe for $500, took 2 months to grow? Not so good. Interesting experiment though.

“Sitting in a special room with temperatures of 90 degrees Fahrenheit and 100% humidity, it took only 90 days for the mushrooms to cover the entire skeleton of the canoe. :

“It also still fruits after it is taken out on the water, meaning it continually grows mushrooms and releases spores.”

Seems to me that if you sat in it for too long the fungus would try to grow its mycelium into you, given that your body would provide it with its ideal warm, moist and nutrient-rich growing conditions. Not really sure how keen I am on becoming one with the mushroom-canoe.

Until the fungus starts developing mold, and then there could be health issues as a result.

They’re putting wires with soy based insulation on vehicles that rodents just love. Enough of this green insanity.

The rodents love the wires, not the cars...well, unless they’re Ralph.

but mushrooms are sponges.

Yes they do suck up water.

It also still fruits after it is taken out on the water, meaning it continually grows mushrooms and releases spores.

She dried the canoe when the fungus had spun its web around her wire lattice. But obviously it sucks up some water when she takes it out for a spin in the lake. Because it starts growing again when she takes it out of the water.

This canoe weighs a hefty 100 pounds when it goes in the water. So, what does it weigh when it comes out?
