Santa Cruz Mountain Residents Take Part in Nightly Howl

Hundreds of residents are taking part, howling every night at 8 p.m

If you live in the Santa Cruz mountains, you’re no stranger to the nightly howl. Hundreds of residents are taking part, howling every night at 8 p.m. to show their support to first responders during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s surreal actually,” explained Boulder Creek resident, Klara Murray. “We were kind of blown away by the entire thing because it seemed a little silly over social media. But, you know, when your friends are like, ‘It’s really cool, walk outside and do it.’ It was amazing.”

As time has gone on, there’s another purpose behind the noise.

“It’s a very interesting thing to look forward to because it just goes to show as a community how much we are there for each other,” said Charlie Brown of Ben Lomond. “It lets everybody know we’re still thinking of you. Yeah, we’re tired of it too, I’m tired of it too. (But) I hear people all the way on the ridge line. A half a mile up there, I hear people.”

“One of our friend’s daughter yelled out tater tots really loud and sometimes she yodels which is the most adorable thing,” laughed Murray.

Some say it’s a blessing in disguise.

“So many people are struggling with being alone right now and being quarantined. So, this is that one moment where can hear that neighbor down the street, they know who it is, and they feel connected. It’s a wonderful thing,” said Boulder Creek resident, Kevin Foster.

During an ever-changing time, some say one thing for now is certain.

“It’s nice for us to kind of sit out here and enjoy that community feel like, okay, we’re still all in this, we’re doing okay and we’ll get out of this soon,” said Murray.

Humans trying to sound like animals. I saw this obese lady laughing like a Cuckoo bird at a McWhopper.

Btw, they’re howling because they like the cops. Not snarling flesh eating howling, but happy howling.
