‘It is impossible to overstate the pain’: Fight against coronavirus will define our era, Bill Gates says
Seattle Times ^ | 4/23/2020 | Sandi Doughton

The novel coronavirus pandemic will define the modern era in the same way World War II shaped an earlier generation, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates says in a 11-page memo outlining his ideas on how best to tackle the disease.

“This is like a world war, except in this case, we’re all on the same side,” he writes.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has committed $250 million to the battle and Gates has been speaking up regularly to influence its direction — something that has sometimes placed him at odds with President Donald Trump and made him a target of right-wing pundits and conspiracy theorists.

Gates’ memo barely mentions politics, focusing instead on the technological innovations necessary to bring the virus to heel. But he warns it will not be a fast or easy process.

“It is impossible to overstate the pain that people are feeling now and will continue to feel for years to come,” he says.

Gates says the social distancing measures enacted around the world saved millions of lives and have not been an overreaction. Even without government mandates and lockdowns, he points out, people would probably have changed their behavior anyway to avoid infection. And even as restrictions are eased, many people won’t immediately resume their old routines until they feel safe.

In the coming months, the drop-off in new infections will be precipitous in places where social distancing has slashed the rate of transmission, he says.

“A lot of people will be stunned that in many places we will go from hospitals being overloaded in April to having lots of empty beds in July,” Gates writes. “The whiplash will be confusing, but it is inevitable from the exponential nature of infection.”

But as restrictions loosen, infections will flare and begin to grow rapidly at many

Go take a flying f in a rolling donut, mr billionaire.

I was up till the wee hours of the morning trying to figure out why one of your programming tools that's been around forever (MFC CFileDialog if anyone cares) still throws exceptions any time its launched, after at least ten years of numerous on-line complaints and questions about the problem.

What will define the era is when we find one these elitist tyrants hanging.

Then it will get real.

He is correct on that.

Bill Gates is an expert on one specific thing - starting a tech company.

But like other liberal celebrities, Gates sees himself as an expert on everything. Education, politics, the economy, etc. And so he is driven to share his every thought with us.

Hey, Bill. How about shutting up and go back to trying to fix Windows Vista. I still use Vista on my secondary computer, and it’s a mess.

“And they won’t feel safe until the free money runs out.”

As long as the Democrats hold the House and can print money, the money will not run out.

‘It is impossible to overstate the pain’

Yeah, the pain of Governors and Mayors around the country, using the virus as an excuse to violate the rights of American citizens that are guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution, the pain of the Democrats using the virus as an excuse to once again attack President Trump, and the pain of the media telling their usual lies to heighten panic, and fear among the populace.

I’ve always told people Bill Gates was never as smart as people thought him to be. Paul Allen and others were the brains behind Microsoft. Gates was the rich kid from Seattle’s east side whose mother was well-connected as an IBM exec.

But we all tend to think those who are rich are smart and those that are unimaginably rich are smarter still.

Gate’s mother helped position Microsoft making Billy Boy rich, but Wall Street made him massively rich.

His recent statements confirm what I’ve told people for years. He knows a bit about coding and PC architecture but he’s limited when it comes to being a full human being. He sees others as game to shoot at, he gets a thrill at seeing others taken down that might overshadow him. He targets them without them knowing and then sits back and smiles when unseen things hit them.

IOW he seems a borderline psychopath but definitely possesses a personality disorder. And when you are massively rich, it doesn’t matter until you eff up so bad with society at large that you can’t recover which is what Gates has done with his vaccine fetish.

There are online videos of people’s smartphones showing Gate’s instagram account receiving nonstop negative messages that are deleted as fast as they come in. Tells me this guy will do anything to preserve his false image.

Blame China first and foremost.......

Second - the response to this virus is likely to be what is most studied and written about in the future based on real data.

Here is the real data Trump and Co. better act on ASAP -

Children have no risk.
Young adults with no underlying health issues have no risk.
Middle aged adults with no underlying health issues have little risk.
Older people with no underlying health issues have slightly more risk.
Older people with underlying health issues have very high risk.

There will be some outliers as always, but these are solid predictions based on what we now know and more data confirms this every day.

THIS is the data we need to use and act upon moving forward. The one sized fits all models that the White House and Governors are using is severely flawed as we have seen because it prescribes the same risks to every person regardless of age and health conditions.

Much of our country could be working right now. Some of our country should likely remain in isolation pending additional data, more widespread testing, and more treatment options for severe cases.

That is real data.

I will give Trump a lot of leeway for his response given what we were being told in the fog of war, but its time to really use the data they have talked so much about and smartly get the nation back to work based on a true risk assessment while we still have a nation. We are going to be trillions and trillions of dollars in the hole from this thing and every Monday morning QB will be armed with the same truth I wrote above in their assessment.

The majority of our nation has little in common with the circumstances of NYC. All of the things the “experts” are demanding or want are many months if not a year or more away. The mortality risk based on age and health condition is what we should be basing decisions on right now - not a one sized fits all model that appears to take numbers from NYC or inflated projections that never came to fruition and apply it to the entire nation.

We are shutdown because they take the mortality numbers for elderly people with underlying conditions and project that onto younger people without those conditions.

I want to protect the elderly and vulnerable. My parents, in-laws, and our last grandparent should remain isolated right now to protect them, but the rest of us need to get back to work.

The insurance companies figured this out long ago. Why is it taking us so long to figure out the same thing?

Last line of the article. Pandemic 1?:

The economic impact so far has fallen disproportionately on lower-income people, while the disease itself is hitting hardest among racial minorities and poorer communities, Gates points out. But at the same time, he says, the level of cooperation has been impressive as the world confronts the first modern pandemic.

“No one who lives through Pandemic 1 will ever forget it.”
