The doctor totally ignores the impact of the shutdown on the infection and death rate.
He uses current data for California to calculate a death rate. I didn’t check but I assume he did it right. But what would that rate have been with no lockdown?
Answer: Nobody knows. Not Fauci. Not this doctor. Nobody.
But what we do know is that the lockdown slowed the growth of the spread of a virus that was increasing nationwide at 30% to 40% per day. Per day!
Any analysis that doesn’t account for the effect of the lockdown is meaningless. Make that Meaningless. He should have estimated the impact and provided a rational for his estimate. And then made his analysis.
I watched a few minutes of the news conference and quickly lost confidence in this doctor. He says 12% of tested Californians were positive, and concluded “if we extrapolate this out” then there are millions of infected Californians. Do you see the problem? It’s that the people tested are not a random sample. They tend to be people with symptoms. So you can’t extrapolate! I’m sure Dr. Fauci wouldn’t have made such an obvious mistake.

There is a lot of essential truth here.
The one bone I pick with him is extracting test positives in and around NYC particularly, to the general population. Through the peak, you had to be really sick, as in hospital-admitted sick, to get a test in most cases. So the big number is not as big in those areas (or likely any other areas where test taking was even self-selected) as that would suggest.
Gotta get close to large, randomized samples to get that accurately.
Oh, yeah. Second bone. It is primarily a direct-from-China strain on the West Coast, but what appears to be a more lethal version that reportedly got here via Europe in the Northeast. Whehter that is accidental or was done to us doesn’t quite matter, but it probably makes what is getting knocked down here in the Northeast more of a challenge.
A single infected person, the initial carrier, started ALL of this, one single person with a virus that can take up to 2 weeks to show symptoms of.
The Djinni is out of the bottle now, can’t be put back, can’t be stopped. It can only slowed until it spreads everywhere around the world, over and over again. These utter idiots who still think quarantining everyone now is thinking either politically or emotionally, not rationally at all.
We can’t destroy everything because of irrational emotional people whom logic comes second in their train of thought and decision making. I get it, this stuff sucks and I personally hope that I’ve already had it and not even known, but even if not I understand hiding from it isn’t doing any good, because I can’t hide every time someone travels the globe on business and brings it right back here to spread again just like it did initially. The really sucky part is those that have had it, then are re-exposed and become ill again. that is my biggest fear now, how many times will it mutate and circulate as a separate virus?
Damn Chinese really did a number on us here, whether or not it was intentionally created as a boutique virus to start with the decision to allow it to spread around the world was a political one. Gotta make sure the playing field was leveled the world over, can’t be the only one who’s economy was ravaged by this stuff.

I think the Dr. is providing useful comparisons, But I question his “extrapolations.” I do not believe that tests for Covid are administered on a completely random basis. People with symptoms are much more likely to have been tested, so the positives will occur more often than in a random population.
