Female-Focused ‘Star Wars’ Series From ‘Russian Doll’s’ Leslye Headland In Works At Disney+

Disney+ is developing a female-centered Star Wars series that will be written and showrun by Lesley Headland, a co-creator of Netflix’s Emmy-winning dramedy series Russian Doll.

Deadline has confirmed the gist of the series. While the exact plot is under wraps, but the series is understood to be a female-driven action thriller with martial arts elements and set in an alternate timeline from the usual Star Wars universe. Disney declined comment on the project, which was first reported by Variety.

It marks the latest Disney+ original series in the Star Wars universe, following the successful The Mandalorian created by Jon Favreau which is already underway on Season 3 ahead of its Season 2 bow. That too has a strong female element in Gina Carano’s butt-kicking shock trooper-turned-mercenary Cara Dune.

Two other Star Wars series are in development at the Disney streamer: an Obi-Wan Kenobi series returning Ewan McGregor to the role from the prequel trilogy, and a Rogue One series based on the 2016 stand-alone feature film that returns Diego Luna as rebel Cassian Andor.

Headland co-created Russian Doll with star Natasha Lyonne and Amy Poehler. The dramedy was nominated for 13 Emmys for its first season, winning two. It was renewed for Season 2. The writer-director’s other credits include the 2015 film Sleeping With Other People.

In December, Headland has signed a multi-year overall deal with Fox 21 Television Studios to create, develop and direct series for network, cable and streaming platforms.

Can someone explain to me Amy Poehler's alleged popularity?

I’m afraid they’d turn Mara Jade into a non-binary polyamorous pansexual or something like that.

Removing her from the Disney canon was probably for the best.

Disney bought Star Wars because they saw the potential to be a perennial profit maker. However after they tried their hands at it, they so badly screwed up the legend and storyline that they lost at least 70% of the hardcore fans.

For myself I only watched up to THE LAST JEDI, and I give it a rating of 5 Barf Bags.

I've rather re-watch the entire collection 7 seasons of the Clone Wars Cartoons than another Last Jedi.

The writers put so much crap in it that it hurts my mind watching it.

Anyways after all is said and done, Disney + Star Wars is a lesson on how some good things must be left alone, even if someone offers you a fortune for it.

But hey, George Lucas got a very nice payday of $4 Billion.

And thats not bad for a lifetime's work.

I can imagine Disney's offerings now as including a sitcom series about a group of stormtrooper cadets, like Friends, or maybe a show modeled on Glee, but set on a magical planet where everyone changes gender in midseason.

Just say no. Let star warts die.

They'll keep making them until they run it into the ground. And then make some more.

I can almost feel it in my bones, but Disney is gonna be pushing the GLBT lifestyles in the next ones.

Who wants to prove me wrong?

Watched “Star Wars” and “Empire” with kids this weekend. Absolute masterpieces. The prequels and sequels are depressing dreck next to them. They already made the series “female-focused” and destroyed it.

They're still pushing the "combat girl" myth for some stupid reason.

Sorry - very few actually exist, almost unicorn territory.

But they'll keep pushing that until somebody actually believes it.

But they already did a whole movies trilogy on a woman led series and it bombed.

There HAVE Been movies where strong women are the leading players.

I saw her in an early co-star role years ago. She was pretty hot looking.

Since then, it’s a chore to put up with her for some reason. At least in films.

Never saw “Parks and Recreation”, though. And have never been a fan of SNL.

It is Kathleen Kennedy’s “tHe FoRcE iS FeMAlE!” BS.

Sure - because it desperately wants to shelter in place, indefinitely. :)

The showrunner is a “married” lesbian.

Star Wars is being ruined. It used to be wonderful for families. Not any more.

The showrunner is a “married” lesbian.

Working for Harvey Weinstein does that to girls.

I don’t care about race, gender, sexuality, etc. I want a good story that leaves out all of that stuff because, quite frankly, none of it fits in a Star Wars show.

Until they learn to write compelling stories without political agendas, they’ll never recapture the magic of the original movies.
