The Problem with Lysol [Disenfectant Spray to battle bacteria/viruses]
April 22, 2020 | vanity with source

Posted on 04/22/2020 10:36:22 AM PDT by topher

Wikipedia has info on the corporation that owns LYSOL.

Link to entry:

Reckitt Benckiser

This company is based in the UK and has connections to the Netherlands.

It is unclear where its manufacturing is done.

Basically, stores are out of Lysol products such as the disenfectant spray and Lysol wipes.

One can get OZIUM as a replacement.

According to literature on OZIUM, hospitals use OZIUM.

Right now (in my opinion), there should be disenfectant sprays and disenfectant wipes available.

Maybe someone can start an American corporation to compete with Lysol.

A good place would be the Texas/Louisiana Gulf coast because of all the refineries (chemical production capability).

In terms of Louisiana, Lafayette is the highest point (hence 'safer' from hurricanes between Houston, TX and New Orleans, LA.

The other key fact is that Lysol uses hydrogen peroxide as a key disenfecting ingredient.

The CDC, which I admit I don’t trust much, does not mention Benzalkonium Chloride as an effective preventive against CV-19.”

CDC announced that a previously unrecognized human virus from the coronavirus family is the leading hypothesis for the cause of a described syndrome of SARS 301. Two coronaviruses that are known to infect humans cause one third of common colds and can cause gastroenteritis. The virucidal efficacy of chemical germicides against coronavirus has been investigated. A study of disinfectants against coronavirus 229E found several that were effective after a 1-minute contact time; these included sodium hypochlorite (at a free chlorine concentration of 1,000 ppm and 5,000 ppm), 70% ethyl alcohol, and povidone-iodine (1% iodine) 186. In another study, 70% ethanol, 50% isopropanol, 0.05% benzalkonium chloride, 50 ppm iodine in iodophor, 0.23% sodium chlorite, 1% cresol soap and 0.7% formaldehyde inactivated >3 logs of two animal coronaviruses (mouse hepatitis virus, canine coronavirus) after a 10-minute exposure time 302.

Pool bleach (10% chlorine) $4/gallon 25 oz chemical resistant trigger spray bottle $4 each (get a few) Three drops dish soap

3 drops, but in general you need to be careful about mixing the two. Some dish soaps contains ammonia and which creates a poisonous gas. Other chemicals can also react, https://momadviceline.com/is-it-safe-to-mix-dish-soap-and-bleach, but as said, 3 drops is not much of a mixture though you should not inhale for a few seconds.

Chlorine bleach and water is all you need.

All disinfectants are in high demand at the moment and supplies are low at stores near where I live. Lysol and other aerosol disinfectants are nice because I can lightly mist any packages or other items that come into my house. Not so easy to do with Chlorox or alcohol wipes. We have my elderly mom staying with us, best not to take chances due to her age.

According to this legend Benzalkonium chloride is the only effective agent?

Why would you say that? There are many chems listed that are effective against SARS-CoV, while on the https://www.epa.gov/pesticide-registration/list-n-disinfectants-use-against-sars-cov-2 Hydrogen Peroxide is listed about 35 times as the main or one of the main agents.

Laugh if you want. Products using Benzalkonium Chloride are not listed. Don’t buy the wrong can.

https://www.epa.gov/pesticide-registration/list-n-disinfectants-use-against-sars-cov-2

Note the disclaimer too. “may be effective” or “products that claim to be effective” and “does not constitute an endorsement.” Also look at the contact time - some require 10 minutes. Ethanol, 30 seconds. Only a few of those claim efficacy against human coronavirus. If you want to kill polio go for it.

In healthcare settings, the CDC recommends products with Isopropanol 70%+ or Ethanol 60%+. This may be because bleach is too damaging to skin.

It does seem people know that Dawn is the most effective, though Walmart has some In-store purchase only, likewise some alcohol .

However, for hand soap Hydrogen Peroxide and any fat-cutting soap should work fine for destroying SARS-CoV-2,as per The science of soap – here’s how it kills the coronavirus

Where do you see hydrogen peroxide? I don’t see it from the search box or by sorting active ingredient. Look at all the columns and EPA disclaimer. That is a list of products with a claim, but they also list the pathogens and many of them do not list Sars-Cov-2 they list things like polio and novovirus etc. Not many specifically name human coronovirus and none that I see specifically Sars-Cov-2 variant.

H202 is not the same think as benzalkonium chloride.

As far as hand sanitizers, in healthcare, this is the CDC statement:

was at walmart yesterday- nope- no dawn either- shelves have been bare of all this stuff for months now- it’s unreal-

The online site says ‘available’ for alcohol- but i get htere and the shelves for that stuff are bare- have been- even out local grocery store has been out I picked up one 90% isopropyl 2 months ago but haven’t seen any since- I’m using it sparingly by making our own hand sanitizer (1/2 aloe vera gel, 2/3 ispopropyl), and i top off the bottles with just the alcohol when it gets down a 1/4 or so- it makes it too thin, but still has soem aloe gel in it to keep it moist for a whilel onger than just straight alcohol

Soap and water work as well as Lysol on viruses.

Dont forget silver.

colloidal silver can be very effective as well.

I know there is a lot of hate, and crazy brainwashed people who claim you will turn purple forever if you even think about it, but it is certain that you wont if you use it as a disinfectant and don’t drink it all instead.

Thank you for the link. I keep wondering how long it will be before regular supplies of Lysol spray are available to the general public. It has always been my “go to” for disinfecting, and I’m on my last can that I had before this all happened. On surfaces that can take it, I use Clorox Clean-Up + bleach. I think I have enough of that to last me, but it will sure be nice when you can find appropriate disinfectants in the stores again. You have to really luck out on your timing.

Hydrogen Peroxide is listed about 35 times as the main or one of the main agents in

I happen to have a can of Ozium spray on hand, and when I look it up on the N list of things that kill Corona virus 19, it’s not there. So I even looked up the active ingredients. Triethylene glycol is only in one product that is approved and the combination is with something else. Ozium also lists propylene glycol as an active ingredient, and that’s no where that I could find on the list. Too bad. I guess I can’t use this as a backup when my Lysol spray runs out.

Soapy water works very well. It dissolves the outer envelope of the virus which inactivates it.

“You have to really luck out on your timing.”

That’s why the “Email me when in stock” feature is available at Staples and Office Depot is so handy.

I was at WalMart a week ago for “Senior Hours” 6 AM to 8 AM. They had a sign that Lysol was one can per customer, so I took one of Regular scent and one of Lemon scent. I also grabbed another product with a limit of one per customer.

I put one of the other product at the head of the conveyor and one at the end of the conveyor and got away with it. Then a supervisor showed up when the Lysol was coming down the conveyor and told me that I was only allowed one. I told her that I had one of each product, one each of different scents. LOL. Didn’t work. I hope the cashier didn’t get in trouble for letting two of the other product slip by her.

Ha, I go through the self checkout lanes. If I’m getting 2 of something, I ring them up in separate transactions. I figure if I’m ever stopped, I’m going to tell them that I am doing shopping for an elderly neighbor, which is the truth on some days. If my neighbor needs the extra item, fine, and if not, then I’ll keep it. So far, no one has questioned me, but it’s only happened once that I got lucky enough to find 2 of anything.

We just put it in a spray pump bottle.

Hydrogen peroxide works fine that way too.

Key all of it is to spray or wipe it on and leave it.

Don't wipe it dry.

Lysol included.

I tell you I was shocked to find the “Checkout Gestapo General” looking over the shoulder of my checkout clerk and to be told off by the Checkout Gestapo General when she discovered my stratagem.

I like your idea of ringing up two transactions and saying it’s for an elderly neighbor. I’ll have to remember that.

Like everybody, I want to reduce my trips to the store to the bare minimum. Buying two cans helps do that. I’ve gone almost 10 weeks with only rarely finding TP and paper towels, so I’ve certainly done my part.

I got luck and scored a pack of Bounty paper towels at CVS the other day. The nice guy in the aisle asked if he could help me find something and I replied “paper towels.” He said “wait a sec” and disappeared into the back of the store. He came out with a nice pack of 12 rolls a couple minutes later and said the truck had just arrived. I NEVER get that lucky!

I got so desperate for paper towels that I bought the flat, folded, unbleached paper towels that go into gas station dispensers on the wall. Home Depot had them. I bought more than I can use in the next five years, too.

Active ingredients in Lysol are either bzk or hydrogen peroxide.
