"Hon. Stephen A. Douglas 2-4...""Presidential Candidates 14-16" Harper's thinks Douglas the most likely Democrat candidate, and mentions several others who we will probably see again:
- Vice President John C. Breckenridge, noted for his youth and moderation on slavery, is said to have many friends in the North, one of whom will turn out to be Oregon Senator Joseph Lane.
- Virginia Senator Robert Hunter, described here as "not a brilliant man" and, "the iron stove scarcely glows with the intensity of internal fire".
He might serve as Jefferson Davis' second Secretary of State (after Robert Toombs) and then President Pro-tempore of a Confederate Senate.
- General Sam Houston of Texas, at age 67, described here as an "eccentric" vegetarian and teetotaler, is nearing the end of his life and remains more Independent than Democrat.
He is a patriotic Unionist.
- Mississippi Senator Jefferson Davis, thought by some Northerners to be a "fire-eater" is here described as sober, serious and reserved, beloved by his friends for his kind and gentle disposition.
- Oregon Senator Joseph Lane, formerly from Indiana, pro-slavery, friend of Kentucky Senator Breckenridge.
His love of slavery is stronger than his love of the United States.
- Former President Pierce's Secretary of Treasury, Kentucky's James Guthrie, slave-holder but Unionist will seek compromises to prevent war and will oppose reconstruction after it.
- Louisiana Senator John Slidell, described here as "handsome" but "very quite" and "unobtrusive" -- "he is more felt in council than in debate".
Originally from New York City, Slidell moved to New Orleans as a young man, became a businessman & strong pro-slavery politician.
His diplomatic skills could be put to use in, say, France, but may not prove equal to the tasks given.
- Georgia Senator Alexander Stephens, former Whig, has a great way with words, could serve in high positions and go down in history most notably for his focus on the "cornerstone" of a new republic.
- Former Speaker of the US House of Representatives, South Carolina's James Orr will likely continue to serve in high offices of two countries until his death in 1873.
I think we will see all of these candidates again, and at least one of them could become President!
