I’m wondering if these were fruit bats, which if I recall are the only ones that don’t make their own Vitamin C, which if true, has interesting implications.

Horseshoe bats make their own Vitamin C. They are also riddled with Prevotella bacteria. The Corona virus lives in the Prevotella in the bat and its innate Vitamin C generation protects the bat from the Corona virus attacking its organs.

Humans are incapable of making vitamin C. We must take it. We also have Prevotella bacteria in oral, nasal, gut, lung, and vaginal surfaces. Since we lack innate vitamin C generation, SARS-CoV-2 is free to infect any of our cells with ACE2, CD4, CD147 receptors as well as our Prevotella colonies. A bloom of Prevotella in the presence of sugar and reduced oxygen provides significant additional growth substrate for SARS-CoV-2.

Several articles say that prevotella in the gut prefers high-fiber diets. An article in Nature points to prevotella also liking chronic inflammation conditions. The chronic inflammation link is easy - kidney disease, heart disease, asthma, arthritis, etc. More prevotella. Got it.

It would be interesting to know how diet ( levels of prevotella) affected morbidity each age group.

How many victims ate a high-fiber, glucose moderating diet, say, Mediterranean, or vegan, diet, which would/should be Vit C intensive by definition? (and theoretically more protective but producing more prevotella). As opposed to meat-and-potatoes diet with less fiber, and probably both less Vit C intake and more refined sugar intake? (theoretically less protective but producing less prevotella).

What role does prevotella actually play?

just a brief:

An additional interesting fact of Prevotella infection. Type 2 diabetics suffer a high degree of gum infections from Prevotella. Just another data point.

Diabetes and periodontal disease

Insulin-dependent diabetic patients with periodontitis have been reported to have subgingival flora composed mainly of capnocytophaga, anaerobic vibrios, and Actinomyces species. Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, and actinomycetemcomitans present in non-diabetics are present in low numbers in diabetics. Increased glucose level in crevicular fluid in diabetics may favor the growth of some microbial species.

There are are other papers discussing this bacterial infection and gum disease.

Really interesting post. I thing pa engineer has talked a lot about prevotella.

Horseshoe bats who carry so many diseases and make their own vitamin C. Might be a key statement. I wish they were doing more studies with vitamin c iv to combat wuhan flu

There is also some research that suggests that increased metabolism due to flight leads to increased body temperature which also works to keep such viruses from becoming lethal. I need to look for that article.
