Today a Chateauroux Airport taxiway gave in due to the weight of a British Airways Airbus A380.

Around 10:30 local time a BA A380, with registration G-XLED, landed in Chateauroux Airport, France for long-term storage. After this, the aircraft was parked on the taxiway along with other BA A380’s that had already arrived days before.

In the images provided by @airline_kitty, it is possible to see that meanwhile taxiing to its parking stand on a taxiway the BA A380 sank into the pavement resulting in damage.

I thought the A380 required reinforced runways and taxiways and that only a relatively handful of airports had these.

I remember back in the day O’hare was one of the airports.

“the A380 required reinforced runways and taxiways and that only a relative handful of airports had these.”

But they did get a very good price in the long term parking area.
Just may take a long time to get it out?

This was once a USAF overhaul depot and before that a GAF depot, JU-%@ assembly point. The RAF used the field during late 1944 to 45. Before 1940 it was a major French Air Force repair and maintenance depot. The work force was known to be rather unemotional and unflappable compare to most Frenchmen. The joke was the base kept a selection of flags of major powers, including the USSR, on hand for quick flagpole changes.

"sank into pavement"

Standard should have been reinforced concrete.

“This was once a USAF overhaul depot and before that a GAF depot, JU-%@ assembly point. “

Interesting.

A b-52 max takeoff weight is 488,000 lbs
An A380 empty weight is 611,000 lbs

perfect metaphor for the a380. The ground feel out from under it in a graveyard because of its own dead weight.

Maybe someone put some of this in the wrong place.

Engineered materials arrestor system An engineered materials arresting system, or arrester bed is a bed of engineered materials built at the end of a runway to reduce the severity of the consequences of a runway excursion.

Actually the 380 is a most magnificent aircraft. Its economic use is limited. It is all about fuel burn. The 380 fuel burn is most reasonable on a seat mile basis if the the damn aircraft is full on a long haul flight. That is not reality.

Thus the 380 is a Jet A guzzling monster. It is a lovely aircraft. Perhaps I will be in back one day on this aircraft. If it was a long haul flight with sufficient passengers to make it economic I would approve. If not full it is just a magnificent beast burning Jet A with abandon.

Boeing should gift Airbus the MAX trademark.

Yes, JU-52 is what I meant. The ones the French used in Indochina from 47 to around 51 were supposedly all manufactured or at least put together here. The 52 was an old system and the Gaf pushed its assembly and depot maintenance off onto occupied air logistics sites in France and Czech/Bohemian Protectorate. The French had a virtual complete assembly plant a Chateauroux and a trained work force and a lot of parts and major sub assemblies to draw on. When the US began to provide material support to the French in Indo China one of the first things the USAF provided were a lot of C-47’s and C-49 (?) Dakotas.

This brings to mind a side story: Back in the days, just before the C5A was new, our lab had a crew that toured the world wherever we had air bases, with a “thumper” to test the strength of runways. The team had been to Germany for quite a while and came back. Don’t know if they had any more work scheduled, since the team leader died. Didn’t take to long, but a letter came to the home of one of the technicians involved with the study. It was not much different than some seen after the end of WWI to returning German speaking US troops. “Send me money so that I can come to America.”

Things did not go well for the technician’s marriage.

I drive past this location when going to Midway Airport.
Not something to forget.

...the airplane slid off a runway at Chicago-Midway while landing in a snowstorm and crashed into automobile traffic, killing a six-year-old boy
