This brings to mind a side story: Back in the days, just before the C5A was new, our lab had a crew that toured the world wherever we had air bases, with a “thumper” to test the strength of runways. The team had been to Germany for quite a while and came back. Don’t know if they had any more work scheduled, since the team leader died. Didn’t take to long, but a letter came to the home of one of the technicians involved with the study. It was not much different than some seen after the end of WWI to returning German speaking US troops. “Send me money so that I can come to America.”
Things did not go well for the technician’s marriage.
Or maybe bad construction due to one of numerous possibilities.
