Brian Dennehy, the veteran actor of stage and screen, died on Wednesday, his daughter Elizabeth said. He was 81.
It is with heavy hearts we announce that our father, Brian passed away last night from natural causes, not Covid-related, Elizabeth wrote on Twitter. Larger than life, generous to a fault, a proud and devoted father and grandfather, he will be missed by his wife Jennifer, family and many friends.
The tall, imposing Dennehy, who was born in Bridgeport, Conn., was a fixture at the movies in the 1980s and 90s, appearing in such films as First Blood, Tommy Boy and Cocoon. Known for his big, tough-guy exterior, he also drew a following for playing Chicago detective Jack Reed in five TV movies.

He was great in Silverado.
I agree with that.
“He was exposed in Stolen Valor as a fake Vietnam war vet.”
That’s true. A shame he did something like that.
I remember him from Semi-tough and Cocoon as well as First Blood. FYI: he was a vet, USMC 1958-63.
“One of my favorites from way back. Sexy hunk of a man.
Good actor, too :)
Cocoon is my favorite movie Brian was in.
He played Walter, the lead alien.
Strong, kind, decisive, gentle... whats not to love?”
Yes, that’s the role I most remember him for.
Silverado, as the crooked sheriff.
Thats the first thing that jumped out to me.
He was super creepy as John Wayne Gacy, too.

He was classic in Rambo - First Blood.
That is correct. Small part, but played well.
Really? Tommy Boy? This was like when Max Von Sydow died and all they could recall was his cameo in some stupid teen comedy.
I heard that too.
‘Eat your face, Jack? That sounds kind of interesting...”
Quite disappointing. I can't get over why people, especially those who are famous, pull stuff like that when it's so simple to out them.
Yup - pretty sure that's the first time I saw him.
Really liked his roles in a couple of movies. First saw him
opposite William Hurt in the truly great “Gorky Park” with Hurt as a Moscow police detective, Ian Bannen as a corrupt commie Russian prosecutor (Iamskoy) and LEE MARVIN(!) as a dealer in sables who is the center of trying to smuggle real Russian sables out of the country.
Great movie from a lot of perspectives, including rebuilding of skull fascia, but Dennehy was super as a NYC cop trying to find out the fate of his younger brother.

F/X he was great as well, the symmetry of the plot, cutting out a dirty fed cop.
Sure that James Woods will comment, think they were friends. Here they are together in “Split Image” a Canadian film about a private eye (woods) hired to find Dennehy’s son who has disappeared into a cult.

When that was originally revealed, he was not too popular on FR to say the least.
He and Sen. Blumenthal-— who still is re-elected despite flagrantly lying.
Dennehy apologized publicly, several times and in writing. He was good friends with Christopher Plummer, both drinking buddies and admitted alcoholics (actors and booze— naw, can’t be!).
Blumenthal is a true lying snake of a socialist. And he and Graham have “worked up a “red flag” law (which tells a lot about fair weather Graham, and even more about fake Vietnam combat vet Blumenthal. A true crap weasel). Dennehy made up for all of that and more in his career and in charity. So there is that.

He made every role he played memorable, a true professional

Yes, I had forgotten about his part in Silverado. A master performance to be sure.
Thank you for the reminder.
I forgot about Gorky Park. And I rewatched it about 6 months ago.
