Six Speed Transmissions mean you’re shifting into second even before you clear the intersection.
Are you turning? Then clutch in, shift to 1st, clutch out and gas, turn, clutch, shift to 2nd, gas, clutch some more, 3rd gear.... etc. etc. All in 10 seconds.
Repeat 50-60 times a day on average.
Then add in bumper to bumper traffic and it GETS WORSE!
Are you freaking kidding me?
Normal people prefer an automatic. Maybe you and your wife don’t drive normally like most people do. Lucky you. Enjoy your clutching and shifting.
Try jump/roll starting an automatic without a power source. Try having your car towed while in park. Wait for the auto trans to hunt for the right gear trying to get up a hill.
I had a car whose ignition key got stuck in on position. I could not turn engine off by key. I put my car in gear popped the clutch and held brake and stopped engine.
I was taken ill at work and hungry and tired..had to go to a bank for cash...battery had just died. Solution: park on hill close to bank.get money...jump start...get home. Recover. Waiting for a new battery to be delivered could have messed me up big time.
So a manual can be very useful.
You haven’t had real fun until you drive in an Asian country using your left hand to shift. Driving in Bangkok with gridlocked traffic makes you wish for an automatic (either transmission or pistol).
We owned a manual Suzuki Swift which was a good car around town, but when we travel we took the automatic transmission Ford Ranger.
Over the years we've found that it's harder to find manual transmissions in American cars. It's really a shame for so many of us to lose the skill. The technology has advanced a lot, and I'm sorry not to be as proficient with the newest versions. When we travel to Europe, we find that renting a car is a whole different world. I was grateful to be with my husband last time we were in England. He was fine with the 6-speed manual combined with driving on the left. I'm not sure I'd have gotten out of the airport parking lot in one piece.
I drove with a couple of sprained ankles.
It was only a half-mile trip.
At the time I couldn’t leave my Tacoma where it was, Sunday afternoon, I wasn’t bleeding and nothing appeared broken. No way was I going to pay for a pricey ambulance.
I got to the quack in the box Monday morning and confirmed the sprains.
Shifting gears wasn’t too bad. I never had to go over 25 to get home.
Pull on the emergency brake...engage gear...feel the tug of power...release brake..move forward... I agree that I do dislike being in that situation...but suppose you are in tight spot with auto trans and your foot slips off break pedal.you can move forward and hit next person in front...
I liked manual transmission trucks because they forced me to pay more attention to the road.
But it is nearly impossible to find a car/truck with that option anymore. Plus the other family members wouldn’t know how to drive it.
A lost art!
My local Toyota dealer couldn’t get the manual Tacoma.
It’s kind of fun to take it in for service. Some of the service advisors have never seen one like mine.
Last year I was talking to one of the staff people while the service was being done.
A manual like mine was traded in. They had to keep discounting it since no one wanted a manual box.
I used to have a 1971 C20 with three on the tree. I loved that truck but was dumb enough to sell it.
Thanks
I’m not enthralled with many of the changes NASCAR is making on the new car, but this one isn’t a big deal. Except the road courses and one oval, they never shift once they get into fourth gear.
A bad bout with a pinched nerve in my neck made me switch to an automatic transmission. I also think an automatic makes things a bit less dicey for most people in winter driving.
Every auto transmission is a ticking financial time bomb.
That sounds just like something my husband would have said (and done).
One of his car clubs is planning a vintage car tour of Novia Scotia in the fall. These guys love driving and talking cars. It's a big disappointment not to be taking their local club drives these days. I suspect the Novia Scotia trip will need to be postponed.
My car was parked at the airport for a week. Must have left the dome light on or something cause it was dead as Epstein when I got back at around midnight. I pushed it out of the space and down the aisle, jumped in, tossed it onto first and popped the clutch and drove home.
My drive to work involves a steep uphill section with a stop light at the top. Cars behind me often crowd my rear bumper, and I have to apply both the brake and the throttle simultaneously. With a manual transmission this must be done with one foot just to avoid rolling backward into the car behind me. It also involves modulating both the throttle and brake in opposite directions (in with the throttle, out with the brake) in order to accelerate. This is possible, but not fun.
I’ll 2nd your post. Modern eight speed automatics have changed the fuel economy ratio, at least that is my understanding.
I do enjoy a manual. Braking hard into a corner, doing a heel-toe on the brake & throttle while shifting from 4th to 2nd gives me a level of control that is just fun.
That said, for all other purposes give me an automatic. The paddle shift double clutch transmissions are excellent.
Ha....
My first truck from a million years ago....
I'd love to stick a millennium in one and sees what happens...
Where’s the prindel?
