Dead people are receiving $1,200 coronavirus stimulus payments, lawmaker says

Deceased people are receiving $1,200 coronavirus stimulus payments from the federal government on Wednesday.

A Twitter user posted about his deceased grandmother receiving a check.

“Deceased people are receiving stimulus checks today,” he wrote on Wednesday. “My grandmother passed away in 2018 — and $1,200 was deposited in her bank account today.”

The direct payments are based on individual or joint tax filings from 2018 for individuals and families who have not filed their 2019 tax returns. Social Security beneficiaries who did not file returns in those years also qualify for the payments.

Just the News has reached out to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to find out if there is a system in place to recoup the payments incorrectly made to dead people and inmates but the agency declined to comment. The Treasury Department and the Social Security Administration did not respond to requests from comment on Monday and Tuesday.

Citizens Against Government Waste President Tom Schatz told Just the News on Wednesday that the IRS relies on data submitted to the federal government from states about deceased taxpayers and inmates and some of the data is outdated. This leads to direct payments going to ineligible individuals such as deceased or incarcerated taxpayers.

"The death file, as it's called, is always out of date and that's always a problem either for normal Social Security payments and certainly in this case for the stimulus checks as well coming to dead people," he said. "It's going to happen. There's no way to avoid it because the information is not up to date and the IRS does not have the most advanced technology, as we know. It's always going to create problems simply because it is not efficient."

Happened a lot after Katrina. It’s not as if they should have done anything to prevent it happening again. /s

You’re right. It’s the sixth paragraph after the preface.

Probably one of the best book intros in English Literature.

The intro in "Tale of Two Cities" is better known, but I agree as an intro "Bleak House" is better. The best, I believe is Jane Austin's "Pride and Prejudice".

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.

In one line, the subject matter and the tone of the book is set up perfectly. "Bleak House" is a phenomenal study of human nature, with even minor characters like Mrs. Jellyby and Skimpole being near caricatures, but actually very much like people we have all known.

America needs a purge and do-over at the Revolutionary War level. Trump can be our Washington. The bloody bastard Brits will be the DNC and treasonous Republicans.

As an attorney I find the intro to Bleak House just a brilliant comment on the state of the judicial system. It hasn’t changed. Justice is not something the justice system serves. It does (thankfully) serve the legal profession well. 😎

Don’t worry. They will take it back. If you remove it from the account they will demand it back.

And that’s before they vote, they get another 2,400 after they vote.

I lived in Rockford, Illinois for 15 years, and frequently passed by an office building featuring the “Dodson Law Office”. I wondered if Esq. Dodson was descended from the evil but effective attorney in “Pickwick Papers” (of Dodson and Fogg), or if he even knew how his name was used in literature.

>>>Americans should be ashamed that the Congress voted to spend these trillions

What about the President, who proudly demanded his signature be on all of the checks?

Too bad the Casinos are closed. That way we could see where all the money ends up going.

My grandmother had to return the social security check for her daughter when she died June 29. I guess it was the July check I suppose. From that moment on, I always thought they should not pay for following month but the past month so that if someone dies they don’t have to payback because it was the last check when they were alive.

Distribution can be fast or accurate, not both. It happens with every big program.

If it was to be done, this should have been used under the auspices of modified unemployment (Companies know who they laid off, with some provision for the self-employed).

Not a few folks are still working, and some are working a lot of overtime. Why should they get these checks?

His grandmother died in 2018 and still has an open checking account? Wonder if anyone has notified SS about her passing...

I’m guessing it was a joint account.

It was an estate with trusts and LLC. Should have been easy. Siblings hated one another and two are really mean. Those two threatened the corporate trustee who had to hire an attorney to cover his behind. The accountant made a $400,000 error that had to be fought for. Everything took looong time to process due to complications- most of which originated with the siblings.
