Feedback on the new conservative periodical The Epoch Times [Vanity]
Self ^ | 04/15/2020 | Fwdude

After seeing several internet advertisements for The Epoch Times, a self-touted conservative alternative to the UrineStream media, I decided to go in for a trial subscription.

Anyone else familiar with this paper and what are your thoughts? Anything as a truthful alternative to what we have now is something I’ll support.

Also available online and via their app.

They are based in Asia, and are a good read.

I don’t have a subscription, but have read some articles online. I like that they do deep dives into topics, compared to the lamestream media short form talking points articles.

AFAIK, the company is financed out of Taiwan, so I’d expect they’d have an anti-Communist China attitude.

It is certainly not new. It was started by Chinese Falun Gong members and was initially mostly an anti Chinese government paper. I remember getting handed the paper when I was walking near Times Square in New York a number of years ago, it was very China focused.

It seems to have broadened it’s coverage since then.

They’re basically a version of Fox News that is NOT owned by China or controlled by Paul Ryan - so good call on subscribing!

I’d expect they’d have an anti-Communist China attitude.

That’s fairly obvious right out of the gate.

the Epoch Times is associated with the Falun Gong movement.

It does report more fully (it has good sources) on the situation in China; and it is generally conservative.

However, one has to be aware that it is a cultic group:

(wikipedia) :

“To re-ascend and return to the “original, true self”, Falun Gong practitioners are supposed to assimilate themselves to the qualities of truthfulness, compassion and tolerance, let go of “attachments and desires” and suffer to repay karma. The ultimate goal of the practice is enlightenment or spiritual perfection (yuanman), and release from the cycle of reincarnation, known in Buddhist tradition as samsara.”

etc.

I have the app. It gives me automatic updates on my cell. Today’s was (of several)...”Trump Authorizing Governors to Reopen States, Warns They’ll be held accountable”. I love it!

Their ubiquitous YouTube adds are terrible.

I thought the YouTube ads were good. It’s why I subscribed (LOL!)

It’s a good move to have a young spokesman selling the periodical.

We need to deep six our old news sources, which are almost all corrupted. I’d Epoch Times and OANN are good candidates to replace them all, including Fox. Maybe Fox is still on probation, but just barely.

I think their content is great.

And I don’t care who is or is not backing them, kudos to all.

For example, this documentary is TERRIFIC, everybody should watch and share it.

I've read some of their articles, which were well written and deeper dive into whole story than the usual MSM articles.

What impressed me in their subscription pitch was the offer of a huge chart showing the structure of power behind the coup attempt. This is the exact opposite from what I'd expect now from a Chinese influence - maybe showing they're succeeding in being more independent.

I don’t like Falun Gong either but their reporting is top notch if not particularly broad.

That said they don’t want to kill anyone or tell them how to live so I’m fine with them.

> the new

Not new. It's been publishing for 20 years. In English since 2003. In print in English since 2004.

Like the conservative “Washington Times” was owned by the Moonies.

I got the trial subscription about six months ago and happily renewed it. I also get the print edition.

Highly recommend it. It's very pro-Trump and has excellent op-ed section, as well as sections on Lifestyle, Food, Mind & Body, etc. All of the content is geared towards a conservative lifestyle.

I get the print edition once a week, I love it. It’s not all politics. The food section is wonderful. And there’s no advertising.

I highly recommend it.
