Governor Newsom’s shelter-in-place order and similar orders at the jurisdictional scale had a profound effect on daily travel in California, with >20 - 50% reductions found across select highways. This in turn seems to have resulted in a ~50% reduction in total collisions and injury/fatal accidents. This unintended benefit of the orders was primarily for drivers and passengers. There was no detectable reduction in impacts to large animals reported by the CHP on state highways and certain major roads. We appreciate the critical attention to detail and complete incident reporting by the CHP and look forward to increased support for their reporting by the state government.
Traffic fatalities on U.S. roads reached an estimated 40,000 in 2018, the third year in a row in which at least that many people died in vehicle crashes, according to figures from the National Safety Council.
So indeed, if this national quarantine continues, we could be saving 20,000 lives per year, by keeping them off the highways. But many other questions remain unanwered.
How many additional lives will be lost by people becoming less healthy? Has this quarantine actually reduced the number of Covid-19 and flu cases?
The fact is, the CDC has not changed it's flu season estimates at all, and continues to show more flu deaths than Covid-19 deaths.

An unlooked for blessing but I suppose they can just keep us locked down forever since the fact is fewer of us die when we are locked down.
Quarantine during the entire flu season would reduce flu deaths too. I don’t deny it.
I deny that it is worth the loss in freedoms. I also assert that deaths of despair go up. We are social beings. We need to be productive. We need personal liberty.
In other news, obesity is way down in North Korea and Venezuela.
Ha! Quarentine is reducing everything except snacking, drinking and binge watching.
I cant wait for things to return to normal.
They should, so did several other insurance carriers.
But Progressive, the company that promotes homosexuals, has not done so.
Just think of how many lives will be saved when millions of people have their cars repossessed because they cant make the car payment because they lost their jobs.
We could finish the year with an overall death rate BELOW normal.

BUT OUR DRIVING ALONE IN GAS BURNING VEHICLES HAS SAVED OUR LIVES.
Californians don’t want to live on top of each other in high rises and travel around in stuffed subways! Now that we learn how viruses travel, we would rather enjoy our minimum germ car culture and long commutes. Especially if you take the 405 to the 101 and head west to Topanga if it’s not jahmmed.
Ask for reduced insurance rates for COVID-19 epidemic.

Nobody is factoring in all the myriad health problems likely to be caused by the isolation of this lockdown:
* Long-term depression, loss of self-esteem due to inability to work
* Suicide due to loss of job and income
* Murder and armed robbery due to loss of job and income (or crooks taking advantage of the situation).
And for the thousands of women whom found a lump in their breast in the last month but can’t get a Dr appointment because of CV.........does the Author Fraser Shilling think the delayed treatment will increase Breast cancer rates over the next couple of years? And so on and so forth for many other ailments not being seen by Dr. currently. What a dumb fluck.
