One of the true greats of Formula 1, Sir Stirling Moss, has died at the age of 90.
Often referred to as the greatest driver never to win the world championship, Moss contested 66 Grands Prix from 1951 to 1961, driving for the likes of Vanwall, Maserati and Mercedes, where he famously formed a contented and ruthlessly effective partnership with lead driver Juan Manuel Fangio.

May he rest in Gods peace.
Coronavirus strikes again. Gone too soon.

One of the greats pre-1990, along with Fangio, Clark, Stewart, Lauda.

I would echo all that.
Maybe some of our British members can chime in, but I read that for years (decades?) the British cops would stop speeders and ask ‘who do you think you are, Stirling Moss?’.
Stirling Moss, Graham Hill, Jackie Stewart, Jim Clark. The Golden Age of Brit Formula one drivers, now joined by Louis Hamilton who may turn out to be the most talented of the pack.
Yes. They are all great men.
now joined by Louis Hamilton who may turn out to be the most talented of the pack.
Hamilton may well end up as the greatest F1 driver ever at the rate he is going.
Perfectly true. In fact, Stirling Moss said it even happened to him, with the policeman not at first believing his identity.
It also happened to a later British Formula One great, when stopped by the traffic police:
“Who do you think you are, Stirling Moss?”
“No, officer. Nigel Mansell.”
RIP.
Wonderful biography of Stirling Moss beginning with a tour with Moss driving the vintage family Austin in which he learned to drive at age six on the family farm. Moss takes Stewart on road tour of what the 1955 Mille Miglia looked like from street level, Stirling Moss and Mercedes Team member the legendary Juan Fangio taking first and second. Culminating in Stewart taking Moss's Vanwall through the Greenwood course.

Stirring tribute at Goodwood with five cars representative of Moss' career, culminating by the Duke of Richmond chauffeuring Suzie Moss in the Aston-Martin DB-1 as the lead car in memorial lap.
Just six months ago with Sir Stirling unable to attend due to his ill health.
Enjoy...
I had the chance to meet him and get his autograph back in 2007. Very nice person with a good sense of humor as well. He was really personable and down to earth.
My father would tell me stories about him other great drivers as he was a amateur driver of the east coast tracks especially Lime Rock. He would travel the US to see the F1 races and loved to go to Sebring in the 60s. My mother still gets up at 2 and 3 in the morning to watch the races from Europe and the Middle East. I just cant keep the kids interested in the sport. My dad even had the car sounds on 33 records of the great races of the day.
I remember in the old Can Am days some thought Mosport Park was named after him depending on how one pronounced it. It wasnt as it was a contraction of motorsport. He was retired by then but was sort of the ambassador for the Can Am series showing up at many of the races.
Thank you.
Put him in a Williams and see how great he truly is.
Sir Stirling, Sir Jackie, Jim Clark, and Graham Hill all raced when the sport was extraordinarily dangerous. Hamilton is practically spoon-fed his wins and the sport has become snoozeville because of it.
