Houston billionaire restaurateur Tilman Fertitta told FOX News' guest host Brian Kilmeade that he laid off 45,000 workers as a 'favor" to help them access unemployment benefits earlier.
"You know, Brian, I went through the '87 crisis, the 2000, the 2008," Fertitta said Saturday on FOX News' Ingraham Angle. "Youre doing the people a favor if you get them furloughed first, because you have them first to unemployment line after the severance that you give them. Its a trick that Ive learned many years ago."

It isn’t a “favor” to the taxpayers and other businesses who pay into the unemployment fund. Everyone’s rates go up, and the taxpayers end up paying for some billionaire’s “favor”.
That’s harsh. Having the government, i.e. taxpayers, pay for his employees instead of keeping as many employed as possible... That’s horrible. I can only hope they all get rehired when he opens back up in May.
Yes, they will get addition $600/week from federals in addition to state unemployment checks. Many will get more money than their regular earnings.
He is socializing his business losses.
You should see what he does to you when he’s really being generous.
Y'mean he didn't pay into the fund too? Seems unlikely. Did your knee jerk or something?
Business owners pay 1.5% of their total payroll every month for this eventuality... just another perk of being in business... people judging on here have no idea what they are talking about as usual.
He says he furloughed them. That means they're not really fired, if he's still in business when the economy picks back up they have jobs waiting. The envy around here is thick enough to spread marxist class envy on everything.
Drama queen. Only businesses pay unemployment taxes. And exactly what would you do? Keep 45,000 employees on payroll including tips when there is no income for several months. I didn’t think so.
Or maybe it's ChiCom bots. They seem to be freaking everywhere these days.
Oh really? What would you do with 45,000 employees for two months with no income? Pay them plus tips plus taxes with no income. I didn’t think so.
You are correct. The ignorance here is staggering - as usual.
The innumerate on FR and on Twitter don't seem to understand this.
Even when you explain it to them.
My employer has me on half pay - and I don't have to show for work.
It's $400 a week - but I can't file for unemployment - dealing me out of the $600 a week windfall.
People need to run the numbers on this.
45,000 employees x 40 hours a week x $15/hr (just a quick guess) = $27 MILLION PER WEEK.
Tilman’s rich, but probably not that rich. Especially with no defined endgame here.
He’s a reeeeeal mensch.
He’s a reeeeeal mensch.
The Marxist and the laid-off IT worker share many of the same resentments against all business owners, large and small. They are ineducable - and many of us have tried.
Hes a snake, that one..
I refuse to eat at any of his restaurants.
Which restaurants are his?
