Weekly Garden Thread - April 11-17, 2020
April 11, 2020 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 04/11/2020 7:00:04 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

I’ve discovered (because I’m sure everyone else knew already, I’m also the slow kid :-? ) that you can use your car as a greenhouse :)

It was cool here yesterday, 60’s, even though it was sunny. I cracked the windows in my car, put one of those remote temp sensing thingies out there and put my little seedlings on the back behind the seats. It got up to 85-90F! At those temps even my hot peppers will germinate sometime before fall.

Hello ALL from Louisiana! I have to tell everyone (I know it’s small in comparison to what BIG gardening some of you do)the rose bush I had asked about cutting back because it wasn’t blooming at all two seasons back , well I didn’t do anything except support the limbs with rods and kept it trimmed around the base ...well THIS year it has gone crazy ...at least 30-40 blooms with one bud after another . It sits just to the left of the main entrance to my house and it is so nice to see that it is happy and producing so many beautiful flowers...I hope all of you guys here are doing well and your gardens are getting started.

GREAT idea! Wish I thought of that earlier this week, when I didn’t want to assemble my temporary greenhouse for less than 10 plants.

My wee arugala and romaine and black Simpson are coming up, as are the Umbrian peas. Looks like every miniscule lettuce and arugala seed sprouted so I’ll have some thinning to do. I used forked branches from our forest for the peas to climb on - it looks cute and it’s cheap, 2 of my favorite adjectives!

Got some bell peppers and San Marzano tomatoes incubating in the greenhouse.

The kale and arugala survived over the winter, and are flowering. So I’ll get some seeds from those. And it helps the bee population, they are all over those flowers! Ive not harvested kale seeds before, so that will be fun to see how they develop.

See! I knew everybody already knew you could do that.

I’m always the last LOL.

And boy, did my tomato seedlings pop up overnight. I brought them into the house last night so they wouldn’t get too chilly.

It’s already up to 80F in my car.

Thanks, tubebender !

Frost free date in mid-Missouri is April 15 or so.
We rig plastic hoops over our raised beds and cover with a bed spread when these kids go outside.

One the wood duck front; I think we may have TWO mother woodies working out of the new duck boxes I put up this winter. Boy, are they skittish !

Pansies and roses blooming profusely. I’ll be having fresh flowers on the table for Easter supper. Happy Easter to all! And Happy Passover as well!

There’s a lady on YouTube who used to dehydrate stuff in her car.

Her name is Starry Hilder.

It’s something that people overlook I think.

I might try it later because I have some pepper seedlings that I started in February that are probably going to die because it just won’t get warm enough here.

They are still basically just sprouts.

I had tomato plants that got stuck at that stage too.

They died so I just gave up and got plants from Lowe’s.

Not good at the gardening deal but I try.

Do you have a secret for growing San Marzanos?

No matter what I do, mine get the old BER thing going on.

Any other tomato plants I have are just fine....

I started stuff late this year. I’ve started earlier, in February, and lost a lot of stuff to damping off because I couldn’t keep things warm enough. It was somewhat better last year because I used the ‘great white’ microbes.

One of the things I want to get this year is a heat mat and thermostat. Maybe one of the tabletop light systems. If that happens I’ll start in Jan/Feb next year and hopefully have good luck.
