FRENCH HOSPITAL STOPS HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE TREATMENT FOR COVID-19 PATIENT OVER MAJOR CARDIAC RISK

A hospital in France has had to stop an experimental treatment using hydroxychloroquine on at least one coronavirus patient after it became a "major risk" to their cardiac health.

The University Hospital Center of Nice (CHU de Nice) is one of many hospitals trialing hydroxychloroquine in COVID-19 patients. It announced it had been selected for the trial on March 22. A statement from the hospital said it was testing four experimental treatments, one of which included hydroxychloroquine. It hoped to establish its effectiveness and side effects of this and the other treatments being tested.

In an interview with the French daily newspaper Nice-Matin, Professor Émile Ferrari, the head of the cardiology department at the Pasteur hospital in Nice, said the side effects had already been identified, with some patients having to stop treatment because of the risk posed.

He said electrocardiogram recordings of patients involved with the trial were being constantly monitored. An ECG measures electrical activity in the heart, and represents this on a graph as a QT interval. Ferrari said these recordings are interpreted and, if anomalies are reported, treatment is stopped.

Asked if this had happened yet, he said: "Yes, from the start of the trial. Thanks to this ECG follow-up, we highlighted the major risks of a very serious accident in a patient, and the treatment was immediately stopped."

The potential cardiac side effects of hydroxychloroquine were highlighted by the Mayo Clinic at the end of March. An article on its website said the drug has potential to lead to sudden cardiac death in some patients. In a small number of patients it has the potential to lead to prolonged QTc , which can result in an abnormal heart rhythm.

Hydroxychloroquine, Mayo Clinic said, blocks one of the channels that controls the heart's electrical recharging systems.

RE: But back to my point, the drug is dangerous if you take it long term but to take it for 5 days not so much.

We already knew that. Even a layman like Sean Hannity said as much. What’s the controversy?

The HCQ treatment for Covid-19 will only be for a week or a bit more at most, NOT YEARS!

Yeh I think that was my point. Short term usage of the drug is not overly dangerous. Apparently there is a lot of hype going around in the medical community that they can’t wholesale prescribe this drug to covid patients without further testing. Thats simply BS.

As I suspected, the age and underlying medical conditions were no where to be found.

“A doctor has already shown that substituting doxycyline achieves the cure without the side effect. “

Doxycycline’s an antibiotic. It has no affect on viruses.

According to doctors who have described the treatment, the antibiotics are anti-inflammatory and act to reduce fluid in the lungs. I'll stand with their explanation. I am not expert enough to say otherwise.

Why didn’t this post start with “Newsweek: “

That way we’d have known skimming that this was BS.

OFFS ... one patient. I thought it was a whyile bunch. Even Cuomo said they are giving the drug combo but not to all due to complications. But, for the most part it seems pretty safe if given under a doctor’s care and had worked.

Maybe in such cases, the virus is already attacking the heart, leaving it vulnerable to the effects of that blocked rhythm pathway.

Implied several patients possibly having this problem, but if it’s a well known side effect, you may just need to try Remdesevir or another promising drug instead, given that the virus could also be attacking the heart during administration of HCQ.

Pneumonia is a bacterial infection and antibiotics is standard treatment.

Antibiotics have no affect on viruses and are not used as a substitute for antiviral drugs.

“The combo of hydroxycloroquine and azythromycin can cause an extended q wave in the EKG.”

Very rare and not well researched. Genetic factors have not been excluded.

Pneumonia can be either bacterial, viral, fungal or due to aspiration of some foreign substance, so you’re wrong about that.

You’re also wrong about antibiotics having no effect upon viruses. There are numerous examples of antibiotics having an antiviral effect. Some antibiotics are even used to treat cancer.

That said, demanding an antibiotic for a head cold or sniffles is idiotic and largely the reason behind increased resistance to various antibiotics.

It is not a well known side effect.
This article does not mention how many others were treated
with no or minimal side effects.

“That said, demanding an antibiotic for a head cold or sniffles is idiotic”

The common cold, like COVID-19 is a coronavirus. If one thinks it idiotic to take an antibiotic for the common cold then why heck would you even consider substituting with an antibiotic for a COVID case?

Biotics can make viral infections worse

I was not intending to provide a course, I was referring to the use of antibiotics. Antibiotics do not cure viral pneumonia.
