Dr. Drew Pinsky is issuing a mea culpa after continually downplaying the danger of coronavirus for months and claiming it was "press-induced panic."
He once said you're more likely to die after being "hit by an asteroid" than the highly-contagious virus. On Saturday, he drastically changed his tune.
"My early comments about equating coronavirus with influenza were wrong. They were incorrect," Dr. Drew said on Saturday, referring to his consistent comments from February and March. "I was part of a chorus that was saying that, and we were wrong. And I want to apologize for that."

I can answer that if you want. Or better to say I can share with you the theory.
Dr. Pepper predicted gas and cavities.
Theorize away. I’d love to hear it.
Precisely.
Of course, some places they say it lasts 17 days.
Apology accepted..........is Dr. Drew running against Shitthead in November? If so, I hope he beats the hell outta him.......
RNA single strands are very error prone. They use RNA dependent replicase, RdRP’s, to copy themselves rather than DNA Dependent RNA Polymerase. Normally like the flu they mutate often and each mutation still makes you sick because it looks brand new to your immune system. There are 7 coronaviruses as of now and so far no lasting immunity with any of them except I hope this one SARS-CoV-2. 4 of them circulate causing “chest colds” one in particular. (Most colds are a rhinovirus.) SarsCoV, Mers, and Sars-Cov-2 are the other three.
Sars-Cov-2 has a copy protector. This is unusual to say the very least. As the NSP12 gene is copying the genome, it will often put the wrong letter in the copy and another, NSP14, corrects the error. There are two practical effects, that the disease does not attenuate over time (bad) and that prior infection or vaccination confers lasting immunity (good).
I have seen reports that the virus is not mutating so much as to prevent a useful vaccine. If you don’t mind a link to the Washington Compost (ugh) here is an article by my favorite epidemiologist Justin Lessler of JHB in Baltimore.

All this applies to why there has been no cure and why I think a vaccine is coming. I have some thoughts about Dr. Zev’s new cure if you are interested. Please share your thoughts, I will be truly interested although I am not knowledgeable enough to settle our FluBro/FeaRper controversy. :-)
If that truth is that the flu is deadlier than covid-19 so be it. Nobody is saying we shouldn't take covid-19 seriesly.
I just want context. Proportion. Reason. Sanity.
85% of covid-19 infections are mild. 98% of patients recover.
Hydroxchloroquine seems to be either curing the virus in many patients or it is minimizing the severity of the symptoms. What is wrong with that?
These questions are not aimed at you. You seem like a very reasonable person who only wants to learn the truth, too.
For some reason, that makes us wackadoos.
Dr.Drew went too far. He was skeptical of everything. He should have been a bit more level headed.
LOL Wackadoo-2 here too!
OK when I first heard about this germ it scared me. It seemed as deadly as SARS or MERS but as easy to catch as a cold!
So by now we know it is not as deadly as that nor as easy to catch as that, but it is the structure of the virus that answers the question for me.
Please ping me as you learn Thanks!
The economic cost of stay at home, is about $125 billion a week. (30% of $1.5 trillion a month). That is real value not made up $2 trillion and about another $4 trillion changed hands in the stock market loss.
About 22,000 people have died in this flu season. Because of the stay at home policy, the flu season has ended weeks early. That chart looks very odd. It was going to be a moderate flu season, according to the CDC. That is about 30,000 to 65,000 deaths. The flu tends to take a more varied demographic, more children than covid 18 which tends more towards the elderly.
The media reaction is wall to wall coverage, and I feel for the people that have been lost, but this is snowpocalypse style coverage and reaction. I would not want to be in NYC, Italy, Spain, France or Iran. If we have turned the corner, flattened the curve or any number of other terms...good. Without knowing how many people had the virus and got over it without any medical treatment or even knowledge we will never know what the response should have been. If the number turns out to be under 20,000 dead and we have destroyed our economy for years, the proper question will be about suffering. And we will never be able to afford doing this response twice...
DK
Very reasonable. Especially the part about a goodly number of people who had it but didn’t know it. I know a number of people who had horrific colds this past winter. The “worst they ever had” was the common phrase.
Up to two years in a freezer....
I was right and a trained Dr. was wrong. It can happen. This is why I’m constantly skeptical of arguments from authority.
Based on what I am reading tonight/this morning, he may again have to admit he was wrong the second time and originally he was right.
That being said, it is not the Andromeda strain.

Yep.
Colorado confirmed cases 4,950
Colorado population 6,000,000
4.950/6000000 = .000825
.0825% not .002%
You’re off by a factor of 40.

The Spanish flu pandemic of 2018 was far more deadly than this COVID virus. The economy was not shut down - and we survived quite nicely.
In 2008 there was the Black Swan of the Financial Crisis which did much to usher in the Obama landslide that November. There were warnings from people in the financial arena (Roubini) that were ignored or laughed at. I remember one on the Kudlow program in 2008 where panelists laughed in his face at his dire predictions. They were ignored. Secretary of the Treasury Hank Paulson (Goldman Sachs emeritus) bleated how nobody saw this coming. It was a complete lie.
Now a Black Swan in another Presidential election year. A serious influenza, not nearly as deadly as the 1918 Asian flu - mostly affecting the mortality of people with pre-existing conditions - shuts down an entire economy (which did not occur in 1918) with Stephen Moore saying last night we are on the precipice of another Great Depression.
2008 and 2020: Black Swans - both pinned to Republican Administrations by the Democrats and their propaganda machines referred to loosely as “the media.”
Sorry: something about this dog that just don’t hunt.
