Only four days ago came word that Tom Dempsey had recovered from COVID-19. The good news was short lived.
The former NFL kicker died late Saturday of complications from the coronavirus, the Times-Picayne reports. Dempsey was 73.
Dempsey had battled Alzheimers disease and dementia since 2012. He was one of several residents of a senior living facility in New Orleans to contract COVID-19, testing positive March 25.

Same guy.
Alex Karras was a defensive lineman for the Lions at the time. In a book he wrote after his retirement ( Even Big Guys Cry) Karras said the Lions defense thought it was a joke.
Just knowing the Saints had no chance the defense didn’t even try to block the kick.
Dempsy made the kick.
The rest is history.
Dempsy had a lot going against him.
He was born without a right hand, a club foot and one leg shorter than the other.
I admired the guy for persevering through it all.
RIP.
That must have been very hard as young girl. God bless.
That was very touching, both as testament to your perseverance and as a fine memorial to Mr. Dempsey.
He had Alzheimer’s
he died of the virus.
Just because you have a chronic illness, it doesn’t mean you die of it.
It may make you weaker so you cannot fight off the virus as well as others.
+1
"Is this the same Tom Dempsey that kicked the longest (63 yard) field goal in history when he played with the Saints in a game against the hapless Detroit Lions in...? 1973?"
That statement is totally accurate. It was the the longest field goal in history at the time.
And the two-seconds of research of which you're so proud was even wrong because Matt Prater kicked one 64 yards in 2013.
You're the one who looks like an ass.
Hubby’a family runs to centenarians.
73 ain’t old. :-)
Yes and he died because his was debilitated and the virus overcame his defenses.
Your logic is like saying that he died of a club foot and could not run fast enough so the lion ate him.
Instead of the truth which would be he died because he was eaten by a tiger, and his club foot was a contributing factor.
From CDC Website: Hospitals to List COVID-19 as Cause of Death Even if It's “Assumed to Have Caused Or Contributed to Death” - Lab Tests Not Required
Given that life expectancy is not far from 73, 73 could be considered old.
It all depends. A guy that is sickly and has suffered from various diseases for 8 years, may not live as long as a more robust 73 year old.
Thanks for pointing that out, Karras was a great man and Blazing Saddles was flawless.
+1 on club feet.
Changed my life having surgery.
Yes, very sad.
for the next few months, DO NOT VISIT FOLKS IN NURSING HOMES.
Use Skype, zoom, jitsi, etc
Funny show! Incidentally, he played DT at about 240 pounds, and was great!!
Prayers up for his family and loved ones...after 8 years, one doesn’t “battle Alzheimers disease and dementia”, one continues to exist despite it and hearts continue to ache and tears to fall...May God receive his eternal soul and comfort those who loved him.
and he only had half of a foot ...
The C-virus did tip the scale to his dying at that precise time but our government should be telling us the whole story of the underlying conditions of people who succumb to the C-virus. If most are like this man seemed to be, it would be a very different situation than if most, even many, had an underlying condition like living a full life with a heart valve replacement. Its too bad that our government does not want us to know the full story. We cannot trust the media or the government to tell us the truth anyway.
