Depends on what kind of nursing and where i guess. My daughter's nursing track included calculus, statistics, organic chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, physics human anatomy and human biology, including work on human corpses in various states of dissection, as well as clinical work with actual patients. The first patient death she saw was as a student.
From what I understand in New York you have to be in the hospital to get the drug cocktail that is working on the virus.
Your primary doctor can’t just prescribe it to you. Herding the less sick virus patients with those seriously ill is stupid. Unless your goal is to create more ICU patients.

But even the casual observer know Keef will survive.

This is about power.
Most HCW unions in the USA specify that hospitals and other health agencies cannot send HCW to take care of people with an airborne pathogen without proper PPE. The same is true with most western airline employee unions
Hence the WHO and CDC will never, ever declare a pathogen airborne because they would lose their power to coerce ill-protected HCW to treat the sick to stop airborne pathogen based pandemics
