Donald Trump's top advisors have expressed doubts about the accuracy of the White House's apocalyptic forecast that 240,000 Americans will die from the coronavirus pandemic, sources have said.
As the US death reached 6,056 Thursday and the nation's healthcare system buckles under the crisis, administration officials said the stark forecasts could have been a tactic to warn the president he needs to act now.
The White House made the shock prediction Tuesday that there will be between 100,000 and 240,000 deaths in the US if the nation continues on its trajectory and current social distancing guidelines are maintained.
Trump said the estimates were based on data 'that has been, I think, brilliantly put together.'
The figures place the US on track for a historic disaster, with more Americans dying from the pandemic than the Vietnam War.
However, some of the president's top advisors are baffled by the figures which have led to fierce debates within the Trump administration, according to three anonymous White House officials.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the US's top medical expert on the pandemic and a member of President Trump's coronavirus task force, cast doubt on the figures during a task force meeting this week, they told The Washington Post.
'I've looked at all the models. I've spent a lot of time on the models. They don't tell you anything,' Fauci said.
'You can't really rely upon models.'
The White House has kept quiet over the numbers, even as far as refusing to explain how they were calculated or providing the underlying data behind the shock statistics.

This disease can take a sudden turn for the worse, if you’re home you may hope it’ll pass rather than rush back to the hospital. By the time you realize it’s not passing, it may be too late. Self monitoring is a lousy position to be in with this disease.
There was an EMT from NYC on Fox News. She said that most of the calls had symptoms which were not critical, so they would not bring the patient to the hospital. But most of the critical cases they did bring in would not survive.
like telling your spouse you totaled the car when in reality you had a small fender bender....
I think people lie about the numbers...pretty sure of it infact...
so buy ahead if you see sales....
where is that information from?....
The rate of deaths/cases was 1.6% a week ago and is up to 2.7% today.

Hmmm...well, a week ago the Phase 3 wasnt law; this week it is law. And a lot has been said in the last week about HOSPITAL REIMBURSEMENTS. Have you ever seen the final hospital bills for an admission that leads to a gradual death? They are huge. If the persons death was attributed to COVID-19, the hospital is golden with 100% reimbursement whether the patient had insurance or not. Deaths not attributed to COVID-19 will have many final bills ending up being at least partially written off. SEE ANY MOTIVATION TO PUT COVID-19 ON THE DEATH CERTIFICATE?

Trump should not mention numbers. Let the so-called experts sell their snake oil of doom to the masses.

They seem to be the “best models available”, but as the Task Force folks have been telling us - the models can be altered by people either taking proper precautions or by people ignoring precautions...ignoring them raises the model estimates and taking them lowers the predicted death toll...they have added some sanity by acknowledging that the models are really best guess deals based on available data and that they give parameters that we can affect.
Florida...north central.
Case to death ratios for other countries look unreliable to me. It has probably to do with whata case is.
Since death from this thing is the scary thing, that’s all I look at, and even deaths in other countries seem suspect.
If the total deaths in the US are going to fall below 50,000 we should know soon.
I agree it isn’t ideal, but I don’t know how the hospitals should really do anything differently. They need the space and staff to deal with more severe cases.
I wouldn’t want to be sent home with it.
I see; I’d imagine you’ll have hotspots in FL, just not near you. Some of the spring breakers coming back up here have it, though they may have brought it down there with them.
I actually believe when this clears prices may dip; people have really stocked up on some items, and big stores will need to lure people back (after recent unpleasant experience there).
Honestly, how much can we eat?
