Videos show sailors sending off ousted USS Roosevelt commander with cheers, applause

Hundreds of Navy officers gathered on board the coronavirus-stricken USS Theodore Roosevelt's hangar deck to cheer for and applaud their commander, hours after he was dismissed.

Capt. Brett Crozier was relieved of duty on Thursday due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command and for not following the chain of command to voice his concerns about coronavirus on the ship to service leaders.

A video was posted to Michael Washington’s Facebook page, that has since been reposted on several platforms, along with the hastags #MYCO and #WEARETRSTRONG.

“That’s how you send out one of the greatest captains you ever had,” someone says in the video. “The GOAT, the man for the people.”

The ship docked a week earlier in Guam after several cases of coronavirus were reported aboard the ship. Crozier wrote a letter to senior military officials, which was leaked to the San Francisco Chronicle and published Tuesday.

The letter discussed conditions on the ship, particularly regarding the danger it posed to the sailors. Crozier warned that “if we do not act now, we are failing to properly take care of our most trusted asset – our sailors.”

He protected his troops at the sacrifice of his career. We need more men like him.

Bullshit. Because of his actions the Chinese and the Russians knew we were probably down a carrier group.

There are better ways to handle this.

Navy Veteran here. Capt. got of lightly for what he did. Revealed readiness status of a major carrier group in South China Sea operational zone. Should have been keel-hauled.

didn't he let the sailors go on leave when they visited Viet Nam? Then he published an open letter to get publicity, including telling the ChiComs (who are busy harassing ships in the South China Sea) that all they need to do to take out an aircraft carrier is to get a couple sailors sick and voila: threat removed.

Yeah, that is what the deep state says, “we had to go illegal to ‘protect’ the nation.”

How does Capt. Crozier protect the fleet by publicly accusing the Navy of negligence ?

That is how he sounded to a lot of us. And the guy had at his immediate beck and call more resources than any other human being on the planet, the President of the US included. He also had planes to bring him, quickly, anything he needed from the outside. And if he needed something from the rest of the task force he need merely ask the task force commander.

Tough Cookies. Chain of Command is Chain of Command, PERIOD. And if it's true he leaked it to the media, he should be Court-martialed and sent to the Brig.

We don't need Captains of nuclear ships tipping off the enemy as to probable troop/ship readiness deficiencies.

It’s already been pointed out on this thread that he sent requests up the chain of command and that the high command ignored them...and then lied about recieving them.

I have no use for their ilk, or you.

He was a damned fine Commander. The kind of man we need.

You and the admirals? It’s been pretty well shown that you lot will lie in a heartbeat and never feel a qualm.

Good riddance! Did he think he was the CO of the Love Boat? He commands a warship! The operational status of his crew is secret! He blew it big time. To make a statement that we are not at war is just as stupid. We have to live every day as though China is going to take advantage of us. He was so concerned about his crew that their congregating in a mass was allowed. This is pitiful!

And aided the enemy. Even now the military is very secretive about the number of CV-19 cases because they do not want to give the enemy any negative data about our operational capabilities. This asshole just told the enemy that an aircraft carrier is now down and out of service.

What a f*cking idiot, traitor, coward. Seems the crew licked him but that will not hold in time of crisis. Thank God it is not a shooting war and this guy in command.

all young healthy people with mild cases. should have stayed at sea until they were all cleared.

I don't agree that he was ineffective: he followed his orders for the Port Visit to Vietnam - an important symbolic gesture in the face of Chinese regional aggression - and three of his crew caught Covid-19 and started showing symptoms. He sent status reports up the chain as the crisis grew.

His answer from the higher-ups was a public statement by SecNav (acting) and CNO to continue the missions without interruption.

A Nimitz-Class carrier is a giant metal can with a single ventilation system. It was a matter of only a very short time before his 7,000 officers and men were enveloped - and not combat-capable - while stranded at sea. You saw what happened to the last set of Guinea Pigs on the Princess cruise in a similar and smaller enclosed environment.

He chose to save his troops by going public, knowing that his very promising career was lost at that point.

Now two points: those are our troops, our sons and daughters - very highly trained, and often the only real thing their families have. Second, if the navy is so concerned with saving face, why are we putting up with it? It's our navy - not the CNO's of the Secretary of the Navy's or Defense or even our President's. It belongs to we, the people. I thought that all of us Freepers were tired of the secretive, career-chasing, Obama-era wimps that had gotten hold of our nation's leadership.

We finally get a commander who risks everything for his troops and all we can see is criticism? We need to tell our President to reinstate (and promote) Captain Crozier at once!

I have and I certainly would not have done what this guy did. He may have been loved but that does not mean you are good leader.

There wasn’t really a problem with what was in the letter, but blindsiding the task force admiral would cement his exit. That admiral is normally assigned to the carrier and probably talks to the captain several times a day. It almost makes me think the captain wanted an out.

Wow!

Anyone who thinks otherwise must have never been in any position of authority in the military.

Heck, when I was a 2nd Lt, Operational Status Reports from a friggin Flying Training Wing were SECRET, at a minimum.

When the actual circumstances reflect actual negligence and cover up on the part of naval command, by calling the public’s attention to the disastrous state of high command...which we knew Obama was installing.

Speaking of which, if you are not part of that then present your plausible answer to the question posited in post nineteen.

That’s fine. You don’t have to agree with me. I would not want this man commanding a dinghy.
