In the coming weeks, if they have not already, your government is likely to begin advising you to wear a face mask to protect against coronavirus.
For those living in Asia, such announcements will be a vindication of a tactic that has been adopted across much of the region since the beginning of the crisis and appears to have been borne out by lower rates of infection and faster containment of outbreaks.
In other parts of the world, this message may be confusing, coming after weeks of public health authorities, politicians and media figures confidently claiming masks do not help and urging people instead to focus on washing their hands and maintaining social distancing.
The tone of such claims ranged from condescending to frustrated, with the US Surgeon General Jerome Adams tweeting in late February -- in all caps -- "STOP BUYING MASKS!"
"They are NOT effective in preventing general public from catching #Coronavirus, but if healthcare providers can't get them to care for sick patients, it puts them and our communities at risk," he added, in a post that has since been retweeted over 43,000 times.

My three or four visits to Japan have all been in the winter and I was always amazed by the fact that about 99% of the people you’d see on the street were wearing some kind of mask. And a friend of mine from South Korea told me just the other day that the same is true in Korea (well,South Korea at least).
Chinese ladies in my area have been wearing masks for years.
Since SARS.
Not all, all the time but a good percentage.
Japan has been doing CCP-Virus correctly. All masks, all the time.
Masks:
Lesson from 1918..
Had they not done that our mask supply would have met the same fate as our toilet paper supply, and medical personnel would be SOL.
Now however they can’t backtrack without looking clueless.
Catch 22.
The Spanish language requires a lot of facial expression. (Turn off the volume on Spanish TV sometime).
A mask probably produces an unacceptable amount of mumbling.
Yes, since SARS-1 in 2000. The Asians learned the hard way the SARS-1 corona virus was contagious days or weeks before a person showed symptoms. Covering the mucus membranes with a mask from door to door proved effective.
In Asia, masks are worn quite often for various reasons. Year-round in densely populated cities where the pollution level in high. They are also worn by a great many people in most Asian countries during the cold and flu season.
Because the demand is there, supply is geared to meet that demand.
The rest of the world has no such continuous demand thus, there isn’t that level of supply available. Certain industries use masks but, that’s about the extent of it here in the USA.
Face masks prevent you from touching your mouth or nose with your hands-—that is how the China Virus is spread.
One NY hospital doc said, “This is not aerolsol-ized. You can’t get it in the air unless someone coughs right in your face.”
He urges masks, only as a preventitve to remind you to not touch your face, and to wash frequently.
No, you’re wrong. With COVID-19just aspirating (breathing) is what spreads the virus. The mask protects others from you. If everyone wears one, the virus is drastically reduced.
See my tagline.
One billion Asians know something....
In my opinion, we were intentionally lied to.
The government did not want people going out and hoarding N95 masks because they were in short supply and urgently needed by medical personnel and cleaning crews. So they lied to us, and told us that they were ineffective, so people would not run out and buy them all up.
Now that new supplies are becoming available, and the medical personnel have a sufficient supply, they can tell us the truth, that wearing an N95 mask when out in public is a very good idea.
It was a lie told for the greater good. Given the choice, they would rather have a mask on a nurse’s face than on my emergency supply shelf.
But it was a lie.
They should not lie to us. It makes us much less likely the next time they tell us something, and they need us to believe them.
Far better to tell us the truth, that the masks are effective and vitally needed by medical and cleaning personnel, and that they would not be for sale to the general public until those critical needs were met. We are all adults. We can handle the truth.
What worsens what you said is church groups bought up all respirator and mask supplies (at least in our area) and sent them back to China so when we needed them there were none to be found.
They were just doing “the Christian thing”.
The surgeon general should resign for his idiocy and hypocrisy.
Plug into The Matrix.
Lotsa hats and yards of material in clothing.
A mask is a way smaller fraction of worn material in 1918.
No wonder I haven't been able to learn Spanish from just listening to US radio in Spanish.
Can't understand, just what does he say?
