The Guardian ^ | 3/30/2020

A 108-year-old woman who survived the 1918 Spanish flu is thought to have become the oldest victim of coronavirus in the UK.

Hilda Churchill died in a Salford care home on Saturday, hours after testing positive for Covid-19 and just eight days before her 109th birthday.

She is the oldest victim of the virus to be named in the UK. She was born in 1911, the year before the Titanic sank and three years before the start of the first world war. It was also seven years before the Spanish flu pandemic, which infected 500 million worldwide, and killed her sister.

It adds up, my granny passed at 93 in 1993 and she was born in 1901. Second marriage...that’s why I am only 49.

She didn’t get the flu. My granddad lost a wife and two kids in 1919. They didn’t hook up until about 1936 or so.

About that Spanish flu - it may not have been Spanish:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_flu#Hypotheses_about_the_source
[One of the few regions of the world seemingly less affected by the 1918 flu pandemic was China, where there may have been a comparatively mild flu season in 1918 (although this is disputed due to lack of data during the Warlord Period of China, see Around the globe). Multiple studies have documented that there were relatively few deaths from the flu in China compared to other regions of the world.[23][24][25] This has led to speculation that the 1918 flu pandemic originated in China.[26][24][27][28] The relatively mild flu season and lower rates of flu mortality in China in 1918 may be explained due to the fact that the Chinese population had already possessed acquired immunity to the flu virus.[29][26][24] However, a study by K.F. Cheng and P.C. Leung in 2006 has suggested it was more likely because the traditional Chinese medicine played an important role in prevention and treatment.[26]

In 1993, Claude Hannoun, the leading expert on the 1918 flu for the Pasteur Institute, asserted the former virus was likely to have come from China. It then mutated in the United States near Boston and from there spread to Brest, France, Europe’s battlefields, Europe, and the world with Allied soldiers and sailors as the main disseminators.[30]

In 2014, historian Mark Humphries argued that the mobilization of 96,000 Chinese laborers to work behind the British and French lines might have been the source of the pandemic. Humphries, of the Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John’s, based his conclusions on newly unearthed records. He found archival evidence that a respiratory illness that struck northern China in November 1917 was identified a year later by Chinese health officials as identical to the Spanish flu.[31][32] ]

Its well know that it didn’t come from Spain. It was called that because Spain was neutral during WW1 and didn’t have the censorship that the warring powers had.

They did not report on it, but Spain did and got tagged with it.

if I hear once more it’s the worst pandemic since the so-called Spanish flu, i’ll scream.

the COVID 19 mob will do anything to ratchet up the poor figures. (1,415 UK deaths is the latest figure I’ve seen). so prepare for a change in how the figure is tallied:

31 Mar: Guardian: Is the spread of coronavirus in the UK really slowing down?
UK data shows the number of new cases has fallen, but experts say only time will tell if this is a trend
by Nicola Davis
The epidemiologist Prof Neil Ferguson (Imperial College London) has said changes in the rate of hospital admissions suggests the spread of Covid-19 in the UK might be slowing down...
***From Tuesday, the Office of National Statistics will be publishing weekly data that includes deaths in the community...

30 Mar: Guardian: Covid-19: deaths outside hospitals to be included in UK tally for first time
ONS to publish additional data but chief medical officer doesn’t expect a large increase in reported deaths
by Robert Booth, Matthew Weaver and Pamela Duncan
The reported death toll from coronavirus in the UK is set to increase beyond the NHS’s daily tally on Tuesday when fatalities outside of hospitals are counted for the first time...
They will tally all of the deaths from late December until 20 March which they believe occurred outside hospitals.
“It will be based on mentions of Covid-19 on death certificates,” said a spokeswoman for the ONS. “It will include suspected cases of Covid-19 where someone has not been tested positive for Covid-19.”...

try to find any reporting on the following flu season in UK press, much less anecdotes about individual deaths:

30 Nov 2018: UK Independent: Ineffective flu vaccine added to 50,000 extra deaths last winter, ONS says
Human suffering and lost lives over winter ‘predictable, preventable and shameful’, fuel poverty campaigners say
by Alex Matthews-King
The flu vaccine’s failure to protect against some of the key strains of the infection contributed to more than 50,000 “extra” deaths in England and Wales last winter, according to data from the Office of National Statistics.

It was the worst winter on record for more than 40 years, with the 1975-76 season being the last time deaths climbed so high above the expected levels.
The NHS was rocked by a record winter crisis in early 2018, with a massive rise in flu cases and sub-zero temperatures triggered by the Beast from the East storm, which added further to death rates...

“This follows some other recent winters when seasonal deaths have been high,” said Dr Veena Raleigh, senior fellow at the King’s Fund. “With an ageing population, the worry is that this could be the start of a trend of periodically high winter deaths.”...

“”When an unclean spirit comes out of a man, it passes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ On its arrival, it finds the house vacant, swept clean and put in order. 45Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and dwell there””
