Legendary songwriter John Prine in critical condition with coronavirus symptoms

Songwriter John Prine is hospitalized and in critical condition with COVID-19 symptoms, according to a statement posted to his Twitter account on Sunday afternoon.

“After a sudden onset of Covid-19 symptoms, John was hospitalized on Thursday (3/26),” the statement reads. “He was intubated Saturday evening, and continues to receive care, but his situation is critical.”

The news follows a video posted to Instagram 12 days ago from Prine’s wife, Fiona, in which she revealed she’d been diagnosed with the Coronavirus. At the time, she said, John also was tested but the results came back “indeterminate.” She noted that John had dealt with several health issues in recent years (including cancer), but that at the time, “so far he’s fine.” Both Fiona and John had quarantined themselves in the wake of Fiona’s diagnosis.

Prine’s most recent concert performances were in Scandinavia in early February. His last Austin appearances were in June 2018, when he played a concert at Bass Concert Hall and taped an episode of “Austin City Limits” at ACL Live.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Mr. Prine.

One of the greatest song writers ever.

Damn, I was just listening to his first album (1971) last night.

And we just heard about Joe Diffie succumbing to the Wuhan Virus this afternoon.

Bob Dylan just put out a 17-minute dirge yesterday so I'm worried about him as well.

Dylan is 78 years old. I hope he stays well.

His song “Sam Stone” is one of the most hauntingly depressing songs I’ve ever listened to. Brilliant guy. I hope he recovers.

So bummed about this. Went to his All the Best Fest last Fall in the Dominican Republic. Had a great time, I think everyone did, including John and Fi. Signed up against for this Fall, looks more and more doubtful.

Dylan should definitely be practicing social distancing.

Fortunately, he seems to have done this most of his career, so he has a lot of practice.

Yes, now that you mention it he was always kind of a loner, wasn't he?

Was just listening to his brilliant first album (1971) last night based on another thread that was running through here concerning the new Bob Dylan 17-minute dirge about the JFK assassination.

His subsequent albums have been very good as well. Granted, an acquired taste, just like Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits. But well worth the journey.

RIP John Prine (if he did indeed pass today).

It is one of the saddest songs ever. His songs build such vivid pictures in your head. He is just flat out brilliant.

Back in ‘99 I was lucky enough to jam with him om a BC Ferries sailing to Nanaimo. His sideman handed me his guitar for half an hour.

Good times!

"Saw him in concert once and put on a hell of a show."

Opened for the Cowboy Junkies 'bout 20 years ago - did a sweet duet with Margo Timmins - nice.
