Definitely intended for an audience beyond the cheering masses. That Hitler fellow is on notice now and won't dare cause any trouble.

Once all the Germans were warlike and mean,
But that couldn’t happen again.
We taught them a lesson in 1918
And they’ve hardly bothered us since then.

-Tom Lehrer

If France attacked Germany around that time they would have wiped Hitler out. The German Army built up rather quickly but was in no shape to fight then.

It would have been amusing if the parade had featured a “float” of some kind representing the might Maginot Line. And perhaps the float would have had mechanical trouble and stopped in the street. All of the military personnel would have just had to go around the Maginot Line and continued on with their business.

Hitler gave orders in 1936 when the Germans marched into the Rhineland, to retreat if the French so much fired a shot.

From that point on, Hitler knew the French were wusses.

So....sleep, baby sleep, in sleep may you linger,
We know our buddies won’t give us the finger!
Heil, uh, hail, the Wehrmacht, I mean the Bundeswehr.

MLF...will scare Brezhnieff,
I hope he is half as scared as I!

This was after all only 20 years after V-E Day. Remember in 1989, when Germany was reunited? Lefties predicted the Fourth Reich was right around the corner.

“The Germans are an amazing people, if you don’t count world wars.” - William F. Buckley, Jr.

The French Army? The film is actually running backwards as the French always march in retreat.

2 yrs. later a different parade on the same street. Propaganda has 2 sides. They look good on the parade ground, but numbers don’t always count. Tactics change, and tactics win wars regardless the troop ratios. One thing I have learned from the last century’s wars. The USA saved their asses twice, and Lafayette got the better of the deal.

The French actually had quite good tanks for 1940, and quite a number of them.

What they didn’t have was a proper doctrine for how to use them, and in particular a doctrine in how to use them to defeat General Heinz Guderian’s Blitzkrieg. The French were crushed by superior doctrine.

"The French were crushed by superior doctrine."

They missed General Bedford Forest's dictum: "He who gets there fustest with the mostest..."

Precisely, so where are the Generals marching?

Didn’t help that the Communists were actively sabotaging the too-late rearmament program, and the merchant and officer classes held the “weak” democratic government in contempt.
